What are the signs and symptoms of Central Auditory Processing Disorder?

The following is a list of behaviors for children at risk for CAPD:

  • Difficulty following instructions in the classroom
  • Difficulty following multi-step directions
  • Difficulty maintaining attention or "daydreaming" in class
  • Difficulty discriminating speech in group settings
  • Poor memory or sequential memory skills
  • Reduced response time
  • Academic difficulties in reading, spelling and/or complex math calculations
  • Easily distracted in class by either visual or auditory distractions
  • Poor self image
  • Seems very tired at the end of the school day
  • Misinterprets jokes or puns or laughs at jokes at the wrong time
