Expert Q&A

By Mindy Hudon
Speech and Language Pathologist

My 2-year-old has a very long, flexible tongue. Should I be concerned?

If your daughter's speech is articulate and she is developing language appropriately, then I would not be concerned by the flexibility of her tongue. A child who has that much control over her tongue probably has excellent tongue strength, coordination and range of motion, which are all good indicators of proper speech development. I don't see her "nimble tongue" as a concern as long as it does not affect her speech production and/or swallowing ability."
