Expert Q&A

By Mindy Hudon
Speech and Language Pathologist

My My 1 ?-year-old daughter loves to hum. Can this be a symptom of anything?

Toddlers love music. At this time, I don't think your child's humming is a "symptom" of anything except normal development. Toddlers love music. However, if your child is not starting to use words, and this humming concerns you, then you should speak to your child's pediatrician. Her pediatrician would be better able to evaluate the behavior. But, in the meantime, take this time to encourage your child to use words and gestures while singing. Not only is music fun, it also teaches skills such as rhythm, which is a prerequisite to reading and writing.
