Expert Q&A

My 2- 1/2- year-old son complains a lot of his back hurting, especially in the car. Could this be the sign of anything serious or is it just a plea for attention?

It is unlikely a toddler would continue to complain of pain solely for attention. If he persists in his complaints, I would recommend a medical evaluation.
One thing to consider is his car seat; I assume that he has been sitting in an approved car seat in the middle of the back seat -- the recommended position for maximum safety. Perhaps something in the positioning is causing him discomfort. In any case, pleas for attention usually are not persistent complaints of pain, and I would check for something more serious.
