Expert Q&A

By Mindy Hudon
Speech and Language Pathologist

My daughter's pediatrician is fixated on my daughter's lack of speech and believes it's directly related to her lack of eating nutritionally. My daughter is currently on iron supplements and multivitamins to help top her up nutritionally as she is a finicky and picky eater. She currently says quite a few words such as "horse," "mama," "dad," "socks," "shoes," "bye," etc. In some instance she is not very clear, and has short attention span. Should I be concerned? She's 20 months old.

Without evaluating your daughter myself, unfortunately I cannot determine whether your daughter's speech is delayed or if nutrition has anything to do with it. But since your pediatrician is concerned about your daughter's nutrition and speech, I recommend you ask him or her to refer you to a registered dietitian who can assess your daughter's diet and make recommendations to you, and to a speech therapist who can evaluate her language development.
