Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.
Family Physician
Associate Director, Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program

My 3-year-old is constantly thirsty and drinks a lot of water. Should I be concerned?

Constant thirst and drinking can be due to many factors. The body is built to carefully maintain electrolyte balances; changes are often fixed by water balance. One of the more common reasons is diabetes, and although it would be very unusual for a 3-year-old, we have been seeing more diabetes in children as a result of the American epidemic of obesity. I would recommend a medical evaluation.
