Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

My 2-year-old gets thrush every time she gets a cold or a new tooth. What could be causing it?

I would look to two possibilities for the recurring thrush infection. One, it could be an intestinal tract inhabitant that flares up from time to time. She may be carrying it and needs some internal medicine to fight it off.

Secondly, somebody else who comes into contact with her might have it and be spreading it. Those two possibilities cover about 99.9 percent of the potential. There would be an outside chance that this is recurring because of another type of immunity problem, but look to these first.

The solution would be to track it, check family caretakers, babysitters, etc., and if they can be ruled out, go back to your doctor and discuss some internal medicines to go along with the topical medicine."
