Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

My 18-month-old was diagnosed with asthma. Should I install an air purifying system in my home?

I would say yes to purifying the air. You wouldn't need a whole-house type of system but look for a room-purifying system. Keep it in your child's room and try to keep the door closed as much as possible. This will help during sleep time, and at that age, he is probably sleeping close to half of the time anyway. You should see a significant improvement in the asthma symptoms and the cost isn't that expensive. Whether your house is old or new, there are a lot of allergens and pollutants that an asthmatic child would do better without.
