Expert Q&A

My 15-month-old granddaughter still doesn't have any teeth. Could there be a problem?

Some children are born with teeth present; however, the "average age" for the first tooth to appear is 6 months. This can vary a couple months either way, but if no teeth are present by the first birthday, it warrants an evaluation by your friendly, local pediatric dentist. She may obtain a small X-ray to verify the presence of teeth and to rule out certain genetic disorders or congenitally missing (from birth) teeth. A thorough oral exam can also disclose the presence of teeth yet unerupted.

Your grandchild will also benefit from initiating a preventive infant dental care program at 12 months of age so that she can grow up cavity-free, in a relaxed familiar environment and establish a dental "home" to reduce a traumatic event should she have a toddling accident.
