Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

Is it safe to pierce my toddler's ears?

Ear piercing of the soft tissue of the lobe is very safe. There are no age restrictions. However, to make sure techniques are good and conditions sterile, you might want to ask your doctor to do it in the office. We really don't see any cases where an infant grabs at the earring or anything negative from pulling at it. Occasionally, the piercing can get infected, so keep an eye on that and you should be fine.
