Expert Q&A

By Alesia Hanson, RPh
Registered Pharmacist

I've heard that my pharmacist can add flavorings to my child's medication. Is this true?

Yes, it is true, and most chain pharmacies do carry the flavorings. The flavorings are provided by a company that specializes in trying to improve the taste of medications. Many big chain pharmacies have partnered with these companies, but a lot of smaller independent pharmacies have not. You may have to ask. It could be available at your pharmacy, but they just don't advertise it.

Also, there are some medications that taste bad regardless of the flavorings added. I have tried flavoring medications for my children, and it does help some of them, but there are still a lot of medications that added flavorings do not improve.
