My 2 1/2-year-old son was prescribed amoxicillin for a bronchial infection and his top gums became very swollen and inflamed and now it has spread to the bottom gums. I'm concerned that it is the amoxicillin? His gums look like they are going to bleed. Do you think the amoxicillin caused gingivitis?
Gingivitis would be an uncommon complication of amoxicillin. It is common for children on antibiotics to have second fungal infections, which should be considered in this overall scenario. I would suggest a visit with your pediatrician as well as your pediatric dentist, to look further into the causes of the inflammation of the gums. You should consider not only the medication as a possible cause of the inflammation, but also the disease process causing the lung condition.
