Expert Q&A

By Cynthia Lair
Nutritionist

What do I do if my 12-month-old only wants to eat hot dogs, cheese and Kix?

Your child does not have the nutritional knowledge at 12 months old to feed himself/herself properly. This young of a child is driven by addictive qualities in foods -- in this case high salt and high sugar. You must take charge and offer only foods that you know will nourish his body. Hot dogs cheese and Kix do not have the proper nutrients for a rapidly growing child. Plus hot dogs and Kix are full of additives. Don't buy foods that you don't want your child to eat. Have him/her eat with you at mealtimes and whatever is served is served. Your child will not starve himself. Don't worry if s/he skips a meal or two. Perhaps as a treat, one day a week, you can serve hot dogs.
