Is salmon OK for young children?

You are wise to want to feed your daughter fish – it really is brain food and is also a great source of protein! The brain is still growing at age 2 and 3 and it needs a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is actually the best source of this brain-building fat. Fish is the ultimate fast food, taking only minutes to prepare in the microwave.

Is it safe? Yes. While you should stay away from fish high in mercury, like shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, salmon has non-detectable levels. The FDA recommends a limit of 12 ounces per week of fish for women, infants and children. IŤ give your daughter up to 6 ounces per week of salmon. All fish have the potential for small bones, which could be a hazard for young children. Buy filets and separate the fish into small pieces before serving to make sure there are no small bones."
