Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.

I often wonder what's the right balance between milk and solid food for my 14-month-old daughter. Right now she drinks about 18 to 20 ounces of milk. Is this sufficient for her?

The balance of milk to solids is less important in the second year of life than a diet which is balanced overall. Recommendations for children in this age group are similar to those for adults: 2 to 3 servings of milk/cheese/yogurt per day (16 to 24 ounces of milk per day). The real key is to supply a diet which is healthy, but balanced. The "food pyramid" is a good source of information about daily requirements."
