Expert Q&A

By Jenny Lewis, M.D.
Pediatrician

I am going through a divorce, and my wife is keeping my son from me. How can I get full custody?

I am happy to hear you are determined to stay in contact with your son. Children of divorce fare much better if they stay in a strong relationship with both their parents. Even though your wife is making it hard for you to see your son at the moment, as the emotional turmoil settles she may realize that you are an essential part of your child's life – so do not give up.

It would probably be worth your while consulting with a divorce attorney to get the best advice as to how to proceed. Be careful not to do anything that could be used against you later as evidence of you being an unfit father (i.e. become threatening or aggressive), even if you feel hurt and provoked. Getting full custody may be an uphill battle, but pushing for enough time with your son to build a lasting and strong relationship with him is in his best interest and in yours."
