Expert Q&A

What are some of the advantages of putting a child in daycare?

There are several advantages of putting your children in a QUALITY daycare. By quality, I mean one that is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs or meets similar standards regarding teacher qualifications, health, safety, facilities, curriculum, teacher-child ratios and other essential items.

If this is the case, I think that there are many advantages to early care settings, especially in the areas of social and language development. Children in quality daycare centers practice sharing, cooperation and problem solving on a regular basis. Most centers encourage children to express their thoughts and feelings verbally. Teachers are constantly modeling complete sentences and exposing children to new vocabulary. They are exposed to a wide variety of literacy activities. That is not to say that a child who does not go to a group center will not develop similar skills. However, a child in a quality center will undoubtedly have this exposure on a regular and consistent basis.
