Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

What signs should I be looking for that tell me my child is ready to start potty training?

Potty readiness can be seen by spontaneous interest by the child in the toilet. Additionally, less frequent urination (i.e. enlarged bladder capacity) may be present. Also, the child who has stool awareness, such as he goes behind the couch whenever he has a bowel movement, is another sign of physically being ready to potty train. But the key to observe is the child's motivation. With true motivation by the youngster, success will occur.
