Expert Q&A

By Alesia Hanson, RPh

What is Septra and what conditions does it treat?

SeptraŽ (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is a sulfa antibiotic and is used when an individual is allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins, or is used for urinary tract infections. It is available as either a tablet or suspension. The suspension does not need to be refrigerated, but should be shaken before using. SeptraŽ can make the individual taking it more likely to sunburn, and it can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. The individual taking the medication should be encouraged to drink extra fluids while on it. SeptraŽ can be given either with or without food.
