Katrina's Diary Entries

8-27-2002

Virginia is now 2 years and 3 months old.
These last few weeks have made me feel very blessed. Even though I went into
pre-term labor at 28 weeks, Virginia was only 10 days early. One of my
closest friends just delivered a baby at 25 weeks, and while they are
definitely still blessed to have this beautiful baby girl...they have a long
road in front of them. Probably 4 months until they can bring their baby home
with them. Sometimes we just don't realize how lucky we are....how truly
blessed we are.

When did we get that mockingbird?
No, we didn't actually get another pet...but Virginia repeats everything now.
It's very cute.....sometimes annoying...and always seems to make us laugh.
Her favorite phrase right now is "OOOH, NOOOO!". She says this when sesame
street ends, when she drops a crayon, she finds a bug or piece of lint. Very
dramatic, my little girl is. We have even been woken up at night to her
saying "oh, no" over the monitor. Oh, gosh...my little drama queen. And now
when she says No, it's not quick and decisive...it's Nooooo (with the end
being at a higher pitch) and she puckers her lips to an O. How can I not
smile at that....okay, so I stop smiling around the 15, 16, 100th time. We
were at Kohl's (my favorite department store) yesterday and she was say Nooo,
all throughout the store at everyone and everything. I was looking at art
work and another lady came to look and she said Noooo every time that woman
touched something. So there I am patiently trying to explain to a 2 year old
that it's okay for the nice woman to touch the pictures. Nooooo. She wants to
see if there is something pretty to buy. NOooooo. Well, she is going to look
anyway. Nooooo. Then I apologized to the woman...she laughed which made
Virginia say it louder and more frequently than before. ugh I supposed I
better get used to it....better than her throwing tantrums!

09-06-2002
So this entry has taken me a while to write. I started it last week, but have just now found the time to finish it.
Better late than never.
I must admit that for the most part I have felt Virginia has been the perfect child. Very few tantrums, usually does what I ask, is a neat eater, sometimes picks up her toys, is polite (as much as a 2 year old can be). But Lord, someone took away this sweet child this last weekend and replaced her with a certified brat. Luckily, most of my sweet girl has returned. So what was so bad? Oh, saying No to everything and meaning it. Throwing tantrums. Crying when she didn't get her way. Purposely disobeying our requests and demands. I guess nothing to terribly bad, but this was a dramatic change for us. And to top it off I had zero patience this last weekend. So let's just say Virginia is lucky to have survived. NOOO, I did not physically hurt her. But she came close to being traded in. (just kidding). While she was going through her weekend brat fest, I decided to paint her room. No, nothing drastic. You'll probably laugh at me for doing this....but.... her room was a light beige. About 1 year ago, I had a crack repaired (older home) and then I dragged the paint can out that the painter had labeled as her room. Well, let's just say it was more like a peach color (there is no peach paint on any of my walls). So I've lived with seeing that everyday for about a year. So I took advantage of the 3 day weekend a painted it a very light pastel yellow. Her nursery theme is John Lennon Real love...so this color goes well. I plan to keep adding to the nursery if I get pregnant. I'll try to post a pic of her nursery (after I get my camera back...I loaned it out to my friends with the preemie baby I mentioned in one of my last BT entries)...soon after she was born I painted two wooden shelves and on one of them drew animals from her theme and painted her name on it. The other one will be painted with the next child's name. I also painted a mirror frame yellow and hung to other yellow nick nack shelves. Her comforter also hangs on the wall. It needs a little more something...I've been searching ebay for the perfect addition.

Virginia contines to grow leaps and bounds in the language department. She is asking questions (where did the doggie's go? where is will (her friend?)). She is also more willing to try and accomodate my language requests "Can you say I love you mommy?" "I OOOve you mommy". Melts my heart! She is also constantly pulling her little chair over to the kitchen counter to help me cook. Time for me to find a new place to put our knives....out on the counter in the knife block is not going to work anymore. Does baby proofing every end? I was making Jamacian banana bread pudding today and she loved pointing to the milk and then the eggs and saying each item. If I'm not in a hurry, I let her help me measure and stir stuff in. She really enjoys being a big girl.
I almost forgot the most funny thing! What does Virginia hate to stop doing? You are never going to guess this. Brush her teeth. She pulls her stool over to the sink, asks for big girl toothpaste (she has learned how to spit in the sink) and she just grins at herself and then brushes and brushes and brushes and brushes. She actually throws a tantrum when we say it's time to do something else. So now I have a tooth brush by the kitchen sink and this keeps her busy if I need to quick get dinner together so something. Isn't that just silly? I can just imagine her asking me when she is older, "Mommy what did I like to do best when I was 2?". "Sweetheart you loved to brush your teeth". "stop kidding with me, what was my favorite thing?"....etc. Who would believe that. I'm not complaining....I hope this continues as she gets older.
I also need to write about Karl's words for Mary had a little lamb. I'm thinking it borders on emotional abuse.... He followed her to school one day, school one day, school one day. He followed her to school one day, and they ate him for lunch. How awful is that? I'm just imagining what her teacher is going to think when she sings that at school. ;-)
I want to give an update on our friend's preemie. Amanda is now 4 weeks old (29 weeks) (tomorrow) and doing okay. She had surgery on Friday and will have heart surgery on Monday. So please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She is quite adorable and very fiesty! Our friends have been incredible strong through all of this. They have really amazed us.....I'm not sure I would be holding it together so well.

I am very forgetful...but did I mention my update on carseats? Well I ended up buying the evenflo apollo. Tried to install it in my Toyota Avalon and could not get it installed tightly. So I installed it in Karl's toyota 4 runner and it's a perfect fit. Virginia likes it...especially the cup holder. I still haven't decided on one for my car, but I removed part of the padding from her current seat (don't worry, nothing that I wasn't allowed to remove) and that bought me about 1/2 inch....so I have a little time. I'm leaning toward the century next step....but we'll see. The only other problems with the apollo is the chest clip is very loose, so I need to figure out a device (maybe safety pins) to keep Virginia from lowering the chest clip. And also when she falls asleep there isn't enough support for her head...although she always manages to get in a good nap.
Well I better get to bed. Besides the fact that this entry is now approaching the size of a chapter in a book, we are hosting our annual Jamaican party tomorrow (why I was making jamaican banana bread pudding...delicious by the way...very sinful). Lots to do yet tomorrow....I'll let you know next time if it was a success!

Love, Katrina and Virginia
