Katrina's Diary Entries

August 6, 2003

Virginia has one more day of daycare tomorrow and then she is all MINE! I am thrilled that she is going to be home with me and that we can go do thing starting Tuesday Aug.12th. Now I’m not sure how much energy I’ll have especially that it has been 100 degrees here, but at least we can go play at indoor gyms, go to the mall. Anything besides sitting in our house!

I’m also glad she is done with Daycare because it seems she picks up a cold every week. I’m sure the same thing is going to happen when she starts Pre-school. I can’t believe Pre-school starts August 21st. My gosh the summer has flown by (okay not really, that’s a lie). I plan to order her a backpack and lunch “box” today on-line that will have her name embroidered on it. She has chosen it to be blue and I have asked her several times over the last week just to make sure she really wants blue. So blue it is.

Virginia is still in Princess mode and I don’t think this phase is going to pass too quickly. I don’t mind. I like that she wants to wear dresses and have her hair done. She also wants to make sure her nails (toes and fingers) are always painted now because she must look good for her subjects. I wonder if she is going to be a high maintenance girl? Whether she is a tomboy or girly girl I don’t care, I just want her to be happy.

Virginia now takes her naps wearing underwear instead of pull-ups. It’s been over a week and she hasn’t had an accident. She does the same at daycare. Yesterday I told her daycare teacher that this was her last week and she was so disappointed. She said that she was sad to be losing Virginia because she is so well mannered, easy going and doesn’t cause any trouble. She said she is the only one in the 3-year old class that can go to the bathroom all by herself. I felt so proud! It’s nice to know that she is well behaved even when we aren’t there threatening time-outs. Yes, that is how we discipline. Virginia ends up in time-out about one to two times per week. Usually all we have to do is threaten to give her time out (time by herself in her bedroom) and she complies. We don’t believe in spanking and we try our hardest not to yell. Although I know I have been guilty at raising my voice at her a few times, and then I feel so guilty!

Right after they started the remodel of our bathroom, Virginia needed a bath. So I started a bath for her in our guest bathroom. She declared that she couldn’t take a bath in there because that was Young Grandma’s (my mom) bathroom. So I explained to her that they were fixing our bathroom and we would have to use this one until it was done. I then asked if she wanted to see the old bathroom. She said yes, so off we went. I opened the door; she took one look inside and then said she wasn’t going in there. I think it freaked her out that there was no longer a tub, shower, or flooring. The big holes in the floor didn’t help either. So now she doesn’t mind using the guest bathroom.

This last Sunday Karl was fixing Salmon for dinner. Virginia was hungry and asked what we were having for dinner. I told her fish and she declared that she doesn’t like fish (this has been pretty normal lately…saying she doesn’t like something that she does like). I told her that she did indeed like fish. She said she wanted pancakes for dinner. At that moment I was talking to my mom on the phone so I asked if she wanted to talk to Grandma thinking this would be a good distraction. She got on the phone and asked if it was Young Grandma. Then she asked Grandma if she would make her pancakes. My mom said she would but that she would have to come to her house. Virginia told my mom that she loved her and bye. Then Virginia told me that she wanted to go to Young Grandma’s house. So I explained to her that we had to take a plane to Young Grandma’s house and that Mommy wasn’t allowed to fly in a plane right now. So she ran over to Karl and told him that he had to fly with her to Young Grandma’s house. She kept asking for the next few hours. I felt so bad (made my mom feel good though). I told Virginia that Young Grandma was coming down to play with her in a few weeks. So that seemed to satisfy her for the moment.
Where do they come up with these ideas?

Hugs,
Katrina and Virginia
