June 19, 2003

I must say that Virginia has been an absolute dream even though she has been cooped up on the house with me. She seems to understand that I can’t pick her up, and doesn’t complain. We do have plenty of snuggle time though whether she is sitting on my lap while reading books or we are laying on the couch together watching a Disney movie. And I am so happy that she isn’t any younger because at least I can sit on the floor with her and play board games or build blocks or legos or play-doh. On Monday I decided that we would cook something together. Now I’m not allowed to stand for long periods of time so I decided we would make homemade ice cream. This recipe didn’t call for any eggs, so I knew it would be quick. So in the morning I cut up the strawberries and let them macerate in lemon juice and sugar. When Virginia woke up from her nap, we measured everything out together and poured it into the mixer. We then poured the mixture into the ice cream maker (I have one that doesn’t require rock salt or ice). Virginia stood on her chair watching the ice cream mix for 25 minutes. I couldn’t believe it. She was just thrilled to pieces. We added the strawberries at the end and then I let her have a little bit of the ice cream as her afternoon snack. I’m going to try to think of something simple that we can cook up once a week.

Funny Things
Virginia has been cracking us up lately. Virginia goes through phases where she either loves a bath or hates one. Last week, she loved her baths and I couldn’t get her out of the tub. That is until she noticed that her toes and fingers were all wrinkled. She broke down in tears and just kept saying “oh, no” and “That very very hurts”. I couldn’t convince her that her fingers and toes would return to normal. You would have thought her arm was cut off. I had a hard time not snickering at her; it was really all too humorous. The last antibiotic that she was on caused her feet to peel. At first this distressed her to no end, going on and on like she did about her fingers. But now she is at the point that she is obsessed with peeling the skin off of her feet and often asks me to help. I often wonder what her thought process is…..3 year olds are truly amazing. I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned Virginia’s schizophrenic tendencies or not. I’m not trying to make light of a very serious problem…so don’t take it that way. An example of this occurred the other night at dinner. We had her favorite meal: broiled salmon, broccoli, and red beans with rice. She sat down and declared that she wasn’t hungry. I told her that was fine and that she didn’t have to eat if she wasn’t hungry (we don’t force feed her). She then declared that she was hungry and that she didn’t like broccoli. Now broccoli is her favorite vegetable, so I told her that she loved broccoli. She then responded with an Oh, I love broccoli? Yes, you do. Then she gobbled it all up while making yummy sounds. She did the same thing today at lunch. And does similar routines with non-eating things to. Whether it’s about wearing sunglasses, or a hat, or going to the bathroom. Karl and I joke about how she can’t make up her mind or is constantly changing her opinion. But Karl knows that she gets this from him. He is the same way, but it usually takes him weeks to change his mind, not seconds. I’m not sure if anyone else will find that humorous….maybe it is just to us.

Yesterday a charity came and picked up our love seat and the guest bed. Yahoo. Now we can officially get started on Virginia’s big girl room. I think today during nap (if I finish this first) I will put together a few shelves. I had Karl go to Target and pick up 2 baby pink shelves and a step stool. I figure if I can work on it all weekend, then next week we can start swapping out the closets and then move her in next weekend. I know Virginia is excited to have a big girl room (we talk about it all of the time) and I would like to have her transitioned at least 4 weeks before Baby K is born. When it is complete, I’ll make sure to post pictures on our babies online web page.

Before I forget, I would like to document the sizes that Virginia currently wears. For shirts she wears mostly 4T and a few in 3T. Virginia has an extremely long torso and needs the bigger size to cover her belly, even though she swims in them. For shorts: mostly 2T with a few 3T. For capri’s/pants: 3T. Her current shoe size is an 8 medium.

Hugs,
Katrina
