The wrath of the UTI

Virginia seemed to be getting over the UTI okay. She was even using the potty again (she wouldn’t use it for about 1 day). However, one day after she was off the antibiotic she started complaining again. This time it wasn’t the same type (urgency) of complaint, but she said her pee pee hurt every time we put her on the toilet. So I gave it one day and it didn’t get any better. I called to try and get her into her Doctor but he had no openings. I opted to leave a message for him in hopes he would call in a prescription. Now I am not normally one who wants medicine for every illness, but I do know that UTI’s require antibiotics. 4 hours go by and I heard nothing. I decided to call her Doctor at home. Dr. C is a high school/college buddy of Karl’s. Luckily he was home because he thought the message was that I was ill. He had called in an antibiotic for me. So he called the pharmacy and changed the prescription. That night we gave Virginia her medicine but she was no better the next day or the day after. I made an appointment for her to see Dr. C, so Karl came home and drove Virginia to the Doctor. Turned out she had a yeast infection. When they arrived home from the appointment, Karl kept saying “I’m so glad I’m a guy”. Once we complete this round of antibiotics we have to bring her in and have her urine tested to make sure it’s really cured. The yeast infection powder has been working miracles as well. Although there were a few days that Virginia refused to use the potty, she is now back to using it like a champ (and has even had a few dry pull-ups after her naps!).

Movie Queen

Virginia loves that I am on bed rest. I’m trying to limit her to 1 movie per day and then she gets to watch 30 minutes of pbskids before bedtime. If she had it her way she would stay glued to the boob tube all day long. Why is it called a boob tube anyways? Anyone know where that term came from? So even though I can’t take her outside to get exercise, I have found that I can put on music with a fast beat and she’ll dance herself silly. We also have been playing board games. The concept of taking turns or rules does not seem to apply to Virginia though. Every time we play she changes the rules and takes as many turns as she wants. Not sure if I should correct this or just let her be for now? We’ve also been reading a lot more books. I really enjoy this because she just snuggles up to me, usually putting her head on my belly while I read to her. And playing with Play-doh. This activity usually centers around making pretend food (cookies, pizza, pasta) and she cooks everything up in her kitchen.

The movie Theater
Even though I’m on bed rest, Karl and I decided that I could sit on my bum just as easily at the theater as I can at home. With that in mind, we decided to take Virginia to the see the new Disney flick “Finding Nemo”. I really thought this would be a great family outing as I had taken Virginia to see the Piglet movie a few months back and she had a great time. Well, the piglet movie was before lunch so the theater wasn’t crowded and it wasn’t loud (outside of the movie itself). We decided to go after dinner this last Saturday after she took a late nap (we would have preferred to go before dinner, but didn’t want to wake her up). As soon as we walked in the door she started to shake and say she was scared. So Karl carried her to the theater. I stopped and bought the popcorn (I think she was more excited about the popcorn than the movie). When I found them in the theater she seemed to be okay. 5 minutes before the show started I made a trip to the bathroom and Virginia decided to come with me. Bad idea. By the time we got back they had dimmed the lights and she didn’t want to go into the theater. It took a lot of talking to get her back inside. Once we found our seats she started to scream because she was scared. I understood why, the previews were definitely scary for a 3 year old. So Karl took her to the back of the theater. About 5 minutes into the movie they returned to our seats and she was happy. She made it through the whole movie without being scared again and when it was over she didn’t want to leave. We’ve learned our lesson to go at a less crowded time.

Vacation Bible School
This week Virginia is attending VBS at our church. She attends from 9am to noon every day. One of the college girls comes and picks her up at 8:30am and drops her off around 12:30pm. She has only attended 2 days so far this week, but Virginia loves it. As soon as she woke up today she asked to get dressed and to eat breakfast so she would be ready for school. I wish I could observe her at school but it is nice to have this time to rest or nap or catch up on email.

Booster Seat
Just before I went on bed rest, I bought Virginia a new car seat. She had outgrown her forward facing 5-point harness seat. Even though I was disappointed that she had outgrown it, it lasted from 7 months (rear-facing) until this month (3 years), so I couldn’t complain. This seat has since been replaced by the manufacture by one that would still fit her (of course). Since she measured in just over 38 inches tall we decided to buy her a booster seat. It’s the Graco Turbo booster and it uses the regular seat belts to restrain her. It fits her like a glove and she loves her new seat. Karl still has a 5-point harness seat in his car. That seat was actually intended for my car (Evenflo Apollo), but I could never get it to fit in tight (it fits wonderfully in Karl’s car). Eventually we will get another Turbo booster for Karl’s car, but it’s not something we have to do now as the Apollo still fits her, and probably will for a few months.

Big Girl Room
Nope, she’s not in it yet, but we are getting closer. One of the charities that comes by to pick stuff up is coming today. We ended up with 5 garbage bags full of baby clothes, toys, and misc baby things that I know I won’t use again. I also gave away the bedding for the guest bedroom, the guest bedroom tv (we don’t want Virginia to have a tv in her room), and a small table. Karl didn’t have a chance to get the old car seat out of the attic so that will go to the next charity. Luckily, another Charity is coming in a week that accepts upholstered items. So we can finally get rid of the love seat from the computer room (we replaced it with a sofa sleeper), the guest bed, and the stroller. So while the closet in Virginia’s new room still has lots of things in it (baby stuff), as soon as the bed is gone we will be able to transition her to her new room. I figure that once she’s in it, I can then put the baby items back in the baby room and she’ll have the closet to herself and her toys.

Hugs,
Katrina and Virginia
