Virginia had a wonderful 3rd birthday. On her actual birthday (which is also our wedding anniversary), we grilled out and had a simple dinner. I had taken her to the store earlier to pick out a cake (I was too tired to make one) for us to have that evening. She picked out a strawberry torte. After dinner, I put 3 candles on it and we sang Happy Birthday to her. The funny thing was she sang along with us. She then blew out all of the candles and was very happy to be eating cake. After dessert, she opened presents. We had already given her a leapfrog leap pad when we went on vacation (her big birthday present), so on her actual birthday she received a mom and dad and 2 babies for her dollhouse. A living room set for her dollhouse, and décor for the dollhouse. She was so thrilled with these items. My mom (her young grandma…that’s what Virginia calls her) bought her a bicycle helmet (that’s what she has been asking for), a book, and a coloring book. Virginia was thrilled with these gifts, and didn’t realize she would be getting more the next day. To tell you the truth she was thrilled to have her young grandma’s undivided attention for 6 days.
The day before her birthday was her well-child check up. I had just picked my mom up from the airport before we headed to the Doctor’s office. Virginia doesn’t mind her pediatrician and calls him by his first name (he’s also a friend of ours), but she doesn’t like to see her gastroentrologist (because he sticks his fingers where it hurts). So she had her weight checked (33 pounds with clothes on), and her height measured (38.5 inches) and I also had them measure her head (18.5 inches). Her stats were weight 80%, height 70%, and head..well, Let’s just say below 5%. Her head has always been on the small side (it was around 5 to 10 percent up until her 2nd birthday when it jumped to 20%), so neither Doctor nor myself are worried. She looks proportional and the fact that her father has a normal sized head and I have an abnormally small head (hidden by lots of hair). I knew her head hadn’t grown since her 2nd birthday because all of her summer hats fit her exactly the same as last year. Onto the rest of the appointment: the doctor had Virginia balance on one foot for 3 seconds. She passed this test, but had it been more than 3 seconds there was no way. He also had her demonstrate that she could jump and run. Then he had her draw an X and an O on a piece of paper. She did great on the O, but for the X she drew 2 parallel lines. Not sure what that means. He asked about her diet (and commented that she is the healthiest eating 3 year old he has ever known…makes me proud!) and also about her general well being. There were no shots, and our last task was to collect urine to make sure her infection has gone away. It’s now one week later, and I have yet to be successful at that. It was a very pleasant appointment.
On Saturday we held a family/friend birthday party for her. This was a small gathering of 13 people. I really was glad it was small because it made prep easy. We also held it after naptime, so that gave me all day to prepare. We had salami and Turkey focaccia sandwiches, veggies and dip, fruit salad, snack mix, homemade vanilla ice cream, and a store bought chocolate cake decorated with butterflies. Most of the food was gone by the end of the party (yea) and everyone had enough to eat. At her party Virginia received, 3 more rooms of furniture for her dollhouse, 3 games (chutes and ladders, candyland, and barnyard bingo), a play-doh barbershop set, a monogrammed purse with dress-up necklaces in it, and a shirt, skort, and Capri set from Talbot’s Kids. She also received presents in the mail from those who couldn’t attend: 3 tops and a pair of butterfly shorts, a nursery rhyme book, a sing-along tape, the Grace growth chart from Pottery Barn kids, the pastel pink sleeper sofa from pottery barn kids, a shirt and capri’s from Gymboree. She really received a lot of nice things. And all but one thank-you card has been mailed (I have to get an address). We sang Happy Birthday at her party (again she sang along with us) and she blew out the candles. She also demanded a Birthday hat to wear, so she wore a regular summer hat because the Tiara wouldn’t stay on her head. She had a blast playing with her 12-year-old cousin (she loves playing with older girls) and that alone was probably the best thing in her eyes. Also during the opening of presents, she was very careful with the paper and didn’t just tear into it; she would tear off little bits at a time.
The day after her Birthday party, she met Alicia (who was down for a wedding and was nice enough to make time to meet me and my family….I met her through my iparenting diaries). Alicia was so nice and gave Virginia a birthday present (a strawberry shortcake doll…so cute!). Virginia has integrated strawberry and her kitty custard into her dollhouse.
On Monday and Tuesday we spent relaxing with my Mom before she got on her flight home Tuesday afternoon. Virginia asked to go home with her. That made my mom very sad, as she wanted to stay. She’ll be back for 2.5 weeks in September…so Virginia will be in heaven.
Potty training is still progressing. Virginia hasn’t had a real bm on the toilet, but I’m not expecting that anytime soon especially with all her hang ups on bm’s. Going #1 though is going well. She still rarely asks to go, so I have to ask her every 2 hours or so. At home I have her wear underwear, but I still have her wear pull-ups when we go out (if we will be out for a while) and during sleeping. My only goal is I can get her to say she has to go, so that when she goes to pre-school in the fall she doesn’t have accidents (she has to be potty trained to attend). We’ve really tried to make this as stress free as possible, because we don’t want her to hate the going on the toilet…..so far it’s working.
I have been receiving items for her big girl room in the mail. Virginia is so excited when a new item comes and she is very excited that she is getting a big girl room. My only task before we set the room up, so to buy her a dresser. In her current room (the nursery) there are built in drawers in the closet, but in her new room there are no build in drawers…so she will need a dresser. I have found one at Babies-r-us and have thought about getting the matching changing table combo dresser (it converts to a regular dresser and night stand) for the nursery. Because as we all know…girls needs lots of dresser space when they get older (eventually Virginia would have both pieces or the baby would have both pieces). Her big girl room has the Sophie bedding from Pottery barn kids (butterflies) and so I’ve been buying pieces off of ebay. She has a few wooden butterflies for the wall, a light switch plate and I’m currently investigating a few paintings. She also has the yellow butterfly rug (pbkids) and the daisy pegs (pbkids). I think she will really enjoy having a room put together especially for her. I really would like to get her moved in with the next month or month and a half so that she doesn’t associate the move with the new baby taking the nursery. Besides buying a dresser, I need to finish cleaning out the closet in that room. Right now it stores all of the clothes that she has outgrown (I’ll probably just move those into the nursery closet until the baby is born and we know if we have another girl or not), a few odds and ends from around the house. I have made room for those items in the hall closet; it’s just finding the motivation and time to actually move them!
Hugs,
Katrina and Virginia
