April 24, 2003

“Mommy, What are you doing?”
“I’m driving”
“Driving?”
“Yep, Driving the car”
“Where are you driving?”
“The store.”
“The toy store?”
“Nope, the grocery store”
“Grocery store?”
“Yep, the grocery store to get Strawberries.”
“Strawberries?”
“Yep, Strawberries!”
“Yea!”

This is how most of the conversations between Virginia I seem to go. “What are you doing?” is asked on the average once every few minutes or so. I am not exaggerating. Most of the time she asks me that several times while I haven’t changed what I am doing. While for the most part I have the patience and laughter to answer the same question a gazillion times, sometimes I just don’t. Like when I am putting dishes away and she has asked what I am doing 5 times. Ummm, still putting the dishes away. How many more times are you going to ask me that question? That’s the extent of me losing my patience….no yelling or anything, just sarcasm (which she doesn’t understand yet). I actually think it is great that she is asking questions. It shows me that she is being observant and when she does ask, I then ask if she wants to help (if applicable). Because everyone knows that almost 3 year olds love to be helpers!

“I don’t want to take a Nap!”
I’m guessing everyone has gone through this stage. I’m wondering how to make naps more desirable? Virginia definitely still needs her nap or she turns into the crankiest toddler you have ever seen by 5 pm. And no, she doesn’t go to bed earlier if she hasn’t napped. The opposite happens, she ends up staying up later than normal and waking up at the same time. Thus continues the vicious cranky toddler syndrome. AHHHH! I can handle the crankiness, but the ability to break down into tears if someone looks at her wrong is almost unbearable. I’m not kidding, I could touch her fork at dinner and you would think I stabbed her in the eye with the fork (that’s how hard she cries and sobs!) So any helpful hints about naptime would be GREAT!

Potty Time
I took Virginia to see Dr. B, her gastroentrologist today. I would say that during the months of February and March Virginia had no problem going poop. Then about 2 weeks ago it started again. So we started up on her medication again to help her go. Well, I gave her the last of it and knew we had to go see Dr. B again. I didn’t want to go on vacation and have her suffer. But Dr. B decided no more medication, that her body needed a break for 2 months. I’m all for stopping the medication, but was hoping it would be after vacation. So now the next 2 weeks I have to give her a dose of Milk of Magnesia twice per day (does this stuff taste okay? I’ve never tried it). And for the next month I have to keep a poop diary (amount, how often and consistency). He also said that while her diet was better than 99% of his patients, I had to push a few foods more. He recommended that every day I give her spinach (raw or cooked) twice per day. I also need to have her eat once per day: prunes, walnuts, and broccoli. I know broccoli won’t be a problem because she loves it. He gave me a quick recipe to make a dip out of fresh (cooked) spinach…so I thought we could use that to dip other veggies. She has started to refuse prunes, so I’m going to try and sneak those into smoothies (orange juice, strawberries, and prunes?). And I’m not sure I’ve ever given her a walnut. She loves macadamia’s, cashews, and almonds…so hopefully walnuts will be a hit too. As per Dr. B, I still have to limit her intake of pasta, bread, dairy, bananas and rice…..but that has become pretty routine for us. Oh, and for the “just in case” he told me to take along her “smooth move” tea for vacation (this stuff tastes horrible!). I’m hoping that she won’t have any problems while on vacation. I’ll just have to remember to push the water (bottled of course) since we will be out in the sun so much.

Feeding our Friends
I took Virginia to Grapevine Mills Mall yesterday so we could get out of the house. I had planned to take her to the zoo, but the weather wasn’t cooperating (threatening thunderstorms). So we met up with her friend Nathan and his Mommy Amber. Nathan is 17 months old and Virginia adores him because she seems him as a baby. We ate lunch (fajitas, yum!) and then decided to get a treat of ice cream. Half way through eating her small portion of frozen yogurt she decided to start feeding Nathan. I wish I had my camera so I could have snapped a few pics and also taken a short video clip. Oh, my gosh…it was the cutest thing. She would slowly move the spoon towards Nathan’s mouth and just before the spoon arrived she would open her mouth to signal to Nathan to open his mouth. She did a great job (no mess) and we praised her for sharing her yummy treat. Both the kiddos fell asleep shortly after so we took two laps around the mall (1 mile per lap). Then stopped in at the Neiman Marcus Last call store and had a blast trying on shoes we couldn’t afford (Do people really pay $500 for sandals?)

Easter Sunday
Virginia loved getting dressed up in her simple Easter dress (which is now just a normal every day sundress). Of to church we went, and as she usually does…she was very good during church. The difference in this service was she went up for the children’s sermon all by herself. After church there was egg hunt, and they had a special area for the little kids. I forgot to bring her basket (whoops) but she was fine stuffing them in the camera bag. We then went home and I made a quick bean dish and whipped up some whipping cream, grabbed the chocolate pecan pie (yum) and off we were to Grandma and Pap’s house. We ate early (to accommodate nap time) then had another Easter egg hunt. Then we headed over to Karl’s best friends mother-in-law’s house to have another Easter egg hunt (Karl’s best friend has a son that is 2 months younger than Virginia). Virginia realized this year that the eggs had candy in them…but she was content to having a few jellybeans. Overall we had a nice Easter.

I most likely won’t update before we leave on vacation, but I fully suspect that the entry following vacation will be filled with humorous happenings from Mexico.

Toddler kisses to everyone,
Katrina and Virginia
