Katrina's Diary Entries

April 15, 2003

A little over one month and Virginia will be 3 years old! While I am shocked at how fast the time has gone by, I am not surprised at how quickly my little girl is growing up. It is such a miracle to continually witness a child learning new things.

Potty Training
It seems I talk about this in every entry. But at the moment, this is a big part of our lives. Going pee pee is still going very well and Virginia no longer expects an ice cream every time she goes. I know having a bm on the potty will happen eventually, but given her record with constipation, this is something we aren’t pushing at all. She knows she will get an ice cream if she goes #2 in the potty, and that both mommy and daddy go #2 in the potty, but that is the extent of our conversation. She is already so emotionally scared on the whole bm thing, I don’t want to do anything to make it worse. We have ventured out a few more times with underwear on and no accidents. I don’t take her out all the time in underwear, just when she wants to. I figure if I leave the ball in her court, then she will feel in control. Besides, whether she has on a pull-up or underwear, she still goes on the potty and not in her pants. The exception to this is nap time and nighttime, but that will come as her bladder matures.

Books
Virginia has become a little better about her books. We now allow her to have 2 board-type books in her room with her for nap and night sleeping. She hasn’t destroyed them yet, so I am hoping this is a sign that maybe she is getting over that stage.

Food
I am probably one of the luckiest moms around because Virginia is not a picky eater. I am truly blessed to not have a daily struggle about food. I want to document what she likes to eat for each meal (she is at the age where she is stuck on eating a few favorites):
Breakfast:
Cheerios with milk (she will not try a different cold cereal, any suggestions?
Cream of wheat
Oatmeal (brown sugar or apple)
Pancakes
Waffles
Eggs (scrambled or “fried”)
Yogurt (favors raspberry, orange, and strawberry-banana)
Fruit (really anything I have on hand)
Milk
Vanilla soymilk
Orange juice

Lunch:
Egg salad
Tuna salad
Spaghetti (or any other pasta) with tomato sauce
Macaroni and cheese
Tacos
Cheeseburger
Veggies (favors green beans and sweet peas right now)
Salad (lettuce and carrots, hates tomatoes)
Pizza

Dinner:
Broiled salmon (her favorite right now)
Broccoli (has been her favorite as long as I can remember)
Any kind of pasta or rice
Tacos (especially loves guacamole and refried beans)
Beef stew pie (have a really yummy recipe if anyone is interested)
Spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, stuffed shells, etc
Beef stroganoff
Chinese (anything not to spicy)
Anything called beans
Corn on the cob (she calls it popcorn)
Meatloaf
Any chicken dish
Steak (as long as it isn’t too pink)
Any kind of potato
Pork chops or tenderloin
Cheese (yep, she has Wisconsin blood in her!)
Fruit (again, anything we have on hand….but favors strawberries and cantaloupe)

Now while she loves her pasta, bread, and dairy, these things are limited because of her battle with constipation. We try to push fruits and veggies since these tend to help keep her regular (along with drinking lots of water every day). We also limit bananas and applesauce because these are also constipating. I know I probably missed a ton of food that she will eat, but these items seem to be what she has been requesting lately or tells me how “nummy” it is during our meal.

Pre-school
Last week the pre-school that Virginia will be attending held an open house. Virginia was very excited about attending, but for some reason thought it would involve a yellow school bus. For some reason her goal in life right now is to ride a yellow school bus. Although she seems content when I tell her that when she gets bigger and starts elementary school she can ride a school bus. Back to her day at preschool. Virginia really had a good time and she proved that she is ready for school. She followed the directions of the teacher, listened during story time, sang along with the songs (even though she didn’t know them), loved snack time (I think eating with other children is entertaining), and love outdoor recess time. She did not want to leave when our morning was over (1.5 hours long). Her soon-to-be teacher commented that Virginia is definitely ready for school. When Virginia woke up on Friday morning she wanted to go back to school. I tried to explain that in the fall (4 months away) she would be going 2 times per week, but she really has no concept of time yet.

Pictures
This last Saturday morning we decided to venture out into the bluebonnets and try to get a picture taken. The best spots are always along the highway. So we found a safe spot filled with flowers. Well Virginia didn’t want to stand by the flowers because she was sure there would be bugs. So no pictures of Virginia. I knew I wanted to get a few belly shots so I wore a button down shirt. I did not think I would have people honking the horn at my bare belly! Karl took a few shots and then we were off. I viewed them (digital) on the way home and realized he had taken them of my rear not of my belly (he’s not so great at picture taking). So we saw that a neighbor had a nice patch of bluebonnets. We stopped there and Virginia let Karl take a few pictures of her as long as I was there with her. So we took a few shots then headed home. We have a beautiful flowering bush along side our house, so I had a Karl take a few belly shots there as well.

I am looking forward to having a lazy day tomorrow (Virginia got up early today and then didn’t nap, so I’m sure we will both need the rest). And on Thursday I am going to attempt to make leg of lamb for our church Seder supper (luckily there are many people making it so if mine doesn’t turn out).

I hope everyone has a great Easter weekend!
Love,
Katrina and Virginia
