Katrina's Diary Entries

March 24, 2003
34 months old

I apologize for being a little late with this entry but I’ll admit that I choose to take naps over writing and entry. Sorry Virginia!

Potty
Well, Miss Virginia is making progress on the potty! WE are all thrilled! She has gone #1 on the potty at least 1 time per day since March 9th. Yesterday she went 3 times. She is also letting us know more when she has to go, although most of the time she is too busy playing and wets herself. But I’m definitely doing less laundry. I think she must have a huge bladder because she can get up at 7am with a wet diaper (I think night time dryness will take some time), eat breakfast, drink a cup of milk, drink a cup of juice, eat lunch and drink more and not have to go until 1pm. How can she hold it for that long? I guess it seems amazing to me because I’ve always had the world’s smallest bladder. ;-) After almost each potty success, we call both Grandmas and she tells them the good news and then she gets her pick of an ice cream cone (mini size) or ice cream sandwich (half of a mini one). I no longer fear her being potty trained by the time fall preschool rolls around.

A little bragging
Karl took Virginia to the park yesterday (75 degrees out!) and told me the following story: On one of the big play gyms they have an alphabet display. Virginia was playing on the gym with 3 or 4 other children around her age. Virginia started to say the alphabet as she pointed out the letters. One of the Mom’s said, “Isn’t that cute she is singing the alphabet song.” Her husband thing corrected her and said, “No, she’s not singing it, she is saying each letter as she points it out.” Karl said at that point she had started to point out random letters and the Dad said, “wow, she is really intelligent, our kids don’t even know the alphabet song”. Karl told me he didn’t have the heart to say she has known her alphabet letters since she was about 2. Karl was just beaming with pride. This may seems so insignificant, but up until she was a little older than 2, Virginia was behind on her speech. It was like she woke up one day and started to talk in sentences and then never stopped. But I think for a while both of us were worried about her speech (he doctor was not worried though). While you don’t want to be happy that other kids might not know something, it’s such a great feeling when another parent recognizes the talent of your child.

Books
So we are having a problem with books. Virginia has unlimited access to her books (more than I can count) and we have always encouraged her to look at books and we read them to her. When we put her to bed at night she almost never goes to sleep right away. She stays up and “reads”, plays, talks to herself, or sings. We don’t mind this activity because she doesn’t fuss about wanting out of her room (she’s blocked in by a gate for safety reasons). However during the last 2 weeks, when I go in to get her in the morning there are shreds of paper everywhere. She was tearing up her books. So we took away all the paper books and left her with only the cardboard type. Well now she is ripping those up too. What do I do? Should I take all of her books away at night? I don’t want to take away something she really loves to do (who wants to discourage reading?), but at the same point I want her to respect her things. What would you do? Please give me some advice!

Movies
I am considering taking Virginia to see the new Piglet movie at the movie theater. Anyone ever taken an almost 3 year old to the movies? She can sit through an entire regular movie at home, so I would think she could do it at the theater. I am just wondering if I am going to regret taking her? Please let me know your thoughts on this one too!

Eating
Virginia, for the most part, has been an excellent eater. She loved her veggies from the beginning (although now she won’t eat all the ones she used to eat), rarely fussed about what we were eating, and has always been such a neat eater (what mom can complain about that). She does get on her FAV kicks though. For a while it was PB & J sandwiches, followed by egg salad sandwiches…..I didn’t mind this but we have to limit her bread intake because of her constipation. Then it was spaghetti but she would say she didn’t want meatballs….but when we would sit down to eat she would end up eating a 3 or 4 meatballs (she still says that she doesn’t like meatballs, but when she eats them she says they are nummy). Then all of a sudden she wanted to live on applesauce (also constipating), I would allow it once per day. Now, of all things, it’s Tacos. I just find this one funny as she loves refried beans (really any kind of beans), salsa and guacamole too. So we have been getting take out or making Tacos at home more often than normal (neither Karl or myself mind this). She has become very good at drinking out of a regular cup also. We only allow this at the kitchen table since she still spills every so often (she can take her sippy cup anywhere). Oh, so when we are eating she eats with GUSTO. She will go “mm, mmm, mmmm, this is so nummy” (her word for yummy). If I ask her if she likes it she says “Yea, I like it!” or she will shake her head yes.

Vacation
We are considering taking a family vacation in the next month or two (before I’m too far along in this pg). Please share with my your thoughts on where to take an almost 3 year old. We would like this to be a relaxing vacation with very little structure. We are considering San Diego/LA (we would spend one day at sea world or Disney land), southern Florida, Mexico, or somewhere in the Caribbean. I found a resort south of Cancun that has a kids club down to age 2 and this is looking very appealing (Gala resort playacar). We wouldn’t just leave her there all day every day, only when we wanted to go snorkel or having a nice slow quiet dinner. Please give me your advice on this, places you have stayed, or anything else you might think would be helpful!

Happy Spring!
Katrina and Virginia
