Preschool
I have officially signed Virginia up for 3-year-old preschool. This is for the 2003-2004 school year. She will attend for 3 hours on Tuesday and Thursday. This preschool is at our Lutheran church and I like the idea that she will learn more about Jesus. We were deciding between our church or the Montessori school that is located up the road from our house. We both like the Montessori method, but I was not fond of the fact that it was 3 hours per day for 5 days per week. That just seemed like an awful lot. The price difference was also a factor. I hate to think price had an impact on our decision but it did…I mean this I only preschool…not college! And on top of that, Virginia will not be able to attend either preschool if she isn’t potty trained.

Potty Training
This is the toughest thing I have ever been through (well right now it seems that way). We so much want Virginia to use the potty and she so much wants to keep wearing diapers. So on Sunday we attempted having her wear panties around the house. Now she loves to wear the panties, who wouldn’t. However, she never made it to the bathroom. So after 3 changes of clothes it was naptime and we put her back in her diaper for naptime. We don’t make a big deal about it when she wets her self. I reassure her that it’s okay and we’ll just get cleaned up and dry clothes on. She didn’t cry and didn’t show any signs that wetting herself stressed her out (she didn’t like being wet though). I gave her a break on Monday and then I attempted the panties thing after naptime on Tuesday. I started off by having her sit on the potty and we sang our pee and poopie song, read a potty book and then took a bath. After her bath we repeated the potty scenario. I let her pick out the panties she wanted to wear and I explained to her that if she went pee pee or poopie on the potty that I would take her for a treat (ice cream cone or the like). She was excited about the treat, so I was hopeful. I asked her about every 30 minutes if she had to go potty and every other time we would go sit on the potty (whether she said she had to go or not). And we had a fun time (singing and reading). But nothing happened. After 2 hours of this, she wet her self. So we went off to take another bath (I read somewhere that if you make it their problem, take away from play time then they will be more determined to go on the potty). The bath didn’t faze her (she generally loves them). So we picked out clean panties and pants and sat down for dinner. During dinner she said she was wet. So we cleaned her up and changed her. Right after she sat down again she said she had to go potty. So I scooped her up and ran into the bathroom….but didn’t make it in time. I was happy we had progress! She actually told me she had to go (she will tell me when she is wearing a diaper too). I had no more panties, so back on the diaper went. I did laundry today, so hopefully tomorrow we will start again. I will only do this if she not stressed out about it. I don’t want to pressure her or have her feel we have let her down. My attitude is that she’ll be out of diapers before she starts high school. ;-) Hopefully, she’ll be potty trained before the fall so she can start preschool! ;-) I would appreciate any tips you may have on successful potty training.

Illness
I took Virginia to the Dr on Monday because she was complaining about her left ear hurting and asked to see the Doctor. She has been complaining about this ear on and off for about 3 weeks. I took her in a few weeks ago and she didn’t have an infection, the pain was thought to be coming from the fact that she had a cold. But when she started complaining again, I knew it had gotten worse. Sure enough she has an ear infection. Normally I would not want to give her antibiotics, but since she has been battling this for 3 weeks, this seemed like the best choice. Last night I started to have a sore throat and I still have it today. No fever…just a sore throat and headache. So I’ve been downing caffeine free tea and honey all day. Sparingly using chloraseptic and taking tylenol (which doesn’t seem to do anything). I hate feeling sick. So Virginia and I have spent most of the day cuddled up on the couch watching the Disney movie Pocahontas. Karl was nice and stayed home for a few extra hours this morning so I could sleep in and try to beat this bug. He knew we would be TV zombies today so he didn’t let her watch any TV. I feel guilty about the extra TV time, but Karl said it’s only 1 or 2 days….it’s not going to kill her. I know he is right. But just in case I’m feeling much better tomorrow, I put together cookie dough for us to do cut outs after naptime tomorrow.

Birthday Party
This is where I’m pretty sure I caught my sore throat. We attended a 2-year-old birthday party at The Little Gym on Saturday. About 20 2 year olds….most of them with runny noses or coughs or both. I didn’t seem to notice that, but Karl mentioned that last night when this sore throat hit. Virginia had a blast at the party. It’s a gymnastics type place…this ran around, danced to music, ate birthday cake and watched the birthday girl open presents. Virginia was very excited about this party because I let her pick out the gifts. I figured she is now old enough to give input and it was so much fun to have her pick things out for the birthday girl (Kathleen). We bought her an Elmo umbrella (Virginia picked out a pink princess one for herself), a pair of shorts, 2 tank tops and a romper (this family is going to Hawaii next week, so the summer clothes are appropriate). When Kathleen opened up the gifts Virginia had picked out, Virginia was so happy and said “I do that”. 3 days later Virginia is still singing Happy Birthday to Kathleen. It’s very cute. I know this year she will enjoy her birthday party even more. I need to start thinking about what we are going to do. I was thinking about hiring the guy who put on shows at the Daycare. He sings silly songs with puppets and Virginia always loved it. I have to see if he does private appearances. I know it will be a small party….probably 4 toddlers, their parents, and family. Or I may I’ll have a separate kid and family party.

Hope all is well at your household,
Katrina and Virginia
