January 6, 2003

Happy New Year. I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday. We left for Wisconsin on December 22 and I had dreams of seeing snow. No such luck. We arrived at night that day. Monday (23) I did some last minute Christmas shopping and before I headed back to my mom’s I stopped at Usinger’s. If you are from WI then you know Usingers…they make the best meat products. Karl (dh) loves pork products (his mantra is “I’ve never met a pork product I didn’t like”). So I picked up bratwurst for him (I don’t like them) and also a bunch of summer sausage. While I am not a big fan of processed meats…I do love usinger’s summer sausage and Liver Sausage (I hate liver though, go figure). This is a less than once a year treat for us. On Christmas eve, all of my extended family gathered at my mom’s house for our usual Christmas celebration. I am the only cousin that is married and has a child….so they all love to play with Virginia. I do have 2 cousins that are engaged (and one of them is expecting)….so soon we will have more little ones at our family gatherings. That will be lots of fun. Christmas morning was spent with my mom, her husband, Karl, Virginia, and myself. Virginia handed out all of the presents and then asked everyone if she could open their presents. So we watched her open all of our presents (it was more fun that way!). We had Christmas dinner late (after her nap)….and that was yummy! Virginia loved the broccoli more than the turkey and mashed potatoes. Go figure…I’m not complaining that she loves Veggies.
Dec 26th, Karl and I took Virginia to the Betty Brinn Children’s museum. I think she really enjoyed being able to run around and get her energy out. We were back at Mom’s place by lunch and then my mom and I headed out for the big sales. We actually didn’t find much (which is good because it never would have fit in my luggage). Karl and I took my mom and her husband out for dinner that night. One of my cousins babysat for us. We got back pretty late.
Friday Dec 27th…..after waking up I called Kathy (the diary writer right above mine). We had planned to get together last January….but Virginia ended up sick. So I was so happy that Virginia wasn’t sick this time. Although when Kathy and I talked she said there was illness at her house, but that Seth was on Antibiotics. So I decided to brave the chance of getting sick. I’m so glad I did. Kathy and Seth are so nice. It really felt like we were old friends. I think part of that is from growing up in Wisconsin with similar backgrounds. We ended up staying for about 3 hours….but it felt much shorter than that. I am looking forward to seeing Kathy, Seth and their new baby in the coming year. After leaving Kathy’s house I made a stop at Kopp’s (if you are from Milwaukee..YUM!)…to get lunch and also some Frozen custard (double yum). We ate lunch when we got home. Virginia loves the hamburger (I was saving the custard for when she got up from her nap). But when she woke up she didn’t want to eat (not like her)….I feared maybe the burger was upsetting her stomach (much greasier than she normally eats). She didn’t want dinner either. When it was bedtime she started throwing up and then promptly ran a fever. Stomach flu. We ended up having to change the sheets a few times during the night, but by morning she was done throwing up. And she ate again. I’d say it took her about 1 week to get back to eating as much as she normally does. So we laid low on Saturday and then returned home on Sunday.
We decided to be lazy on Monday. We went to a friend’s house for New Years eve (kid friendly). Karl made is “famous” sausage bread, and I brought a bean a beef casserole (yum!) and a large fruit salad. There was definitely enough food…we stuffed our faces. And then left to come home around 1am. Even though Virginia went to bed only 30 minutes after her normal bed time that night (she’s really good about going to bed in strange places) she slept in until 9:30am. That was a treat. New Year’s day was a day of Football (and little shopping for me). It was back to work on Thursday, so Karl’s mom came over to watch Virginia. They both love their time together. I think we will probably still make regular “dates” for them even after I am no longer working. I have only 2 day of work left ….Tuesday and Wednesday. Yahoo.

Today (jan 6th) was Virginia’s first day at Gymnastics. The parents sit behind a 2-way mirror (?) so that the kids can’t see us. It looked like she was having a great time and she looked so cute in her leotard. After class I asked her if she had fun and she said “Yea!”. This is a once a week, 40-minute class. I also signed her up for a Spanish class on Thursday’s. And our local library has toddler story time once a week. So we will stay busy…and she will have interaction time with other kids (which I think is very important).

On the constipation front. At our last visit with her gastro dr, he said to cut her off her medicine cold turkey for one week to see how it goes. Well Thursday will mark 2 weeks. While she isn’t going every day….she is going every other day. She still tries to hold it in, but this is huge progress. When we tried this before (for only ½ week) she got so “backed” up it was horrible. So yea! Oh, and she has pooped on the potty twice!! Yahoo!!!

Cheers,
Katrina and Virginia
