Kimberly's Diary EntriesDiary Navigation: |
December 5, 2000
Where to begin! I know it's been a while since my last diary entry so I have lots to talk about. Sam has had a growth spurt and has outgrown the 9 to 12 month clothes (at the age of 20 months!). In fact, the 18 month clothes fit perfectly now; he must have grown almost 2 inches in the past three months. He's also been getting his eye-teeth. The top two have broken through the gum but the bottom ones are coming in so slowly. Sam has slept poorly and been drooling constantly for the past month and a half. He's the only child his age I know who has to wear drool bibs.
It's so fun to talk to Sam now. He can now say three or more word sentences, although sometimes they're hard to understand. The funniest, cutest thing he says is "not to be, not to be. Question". He picked that up because he used to say something that sounded like "to be" but I wasn't sure what he was talking about so I just turned it into Hamlet's soliloquy and Sam started saying it too. He uses "-ing" and plural s and possessive s and sometimes "me" and "you." He's also finally starting to say the "s" sound at the beginning of words. He calls himself "Sammy" now instead of "Ammy."
At Thanksgiving we visited Mike's family and Sam got to play with two of his cousins (ages 4 and 6). He instantly loved them and the last thing he'd say at night and the first thing he'd say in the morning were their names. Sam also got to go to a real beach for the first time and absolutely loved the waves crashing around his legs--even though the water was fairly cool.
At Thanksgiving he picked up the expression "Everybody, let's eat!" Speaking of eating, Sam is definitely becoming more adventurous in his eating habits. This week, broccoli is his favorite food and he ate two segments of a tangerine today. In fact, when we were at a social gathering, somebody commented about what a good eater Sam was because he was eating a broccoli casserole. It's true that he does eat a much bigger variety of foods than he did, although he doesn't eat large quantities of food. I wasted so much time worrying about his refusal to eat solid food. But I do know now that I was right not to pressure him and to merely keep offering foods and to try to make mealtime pleasant and light.
Right now, Sam's favorite book is "Rolie Polie Olie". He especially likes the teapot house that Olie lives in. I gave him an old teapot to play with and he puts his animals and Sesame Street figurines in it and it becomes their "teapot house." In fact, whenever we see a teapot, Sam doesn't just call it a teapot, he calls it a "teapot house." His imagination is developing as well. He calls the white glass knobs on the bathroom cabinets "door eyes" because they look like eyes.
Until next time,
Kimberly
