May 10, 2000
May 10, 2000Sam has really gotten into music and rhymes. He especially likes to hear songs while he is eating. I can't say "muffin" without him dancing and gesturing me to sing "Do you know the muffin man"! He moves his body to nursery rhymes and rhythmic stories. I don't think it's a coincidence either; his interest in rhymes correlates to his current language development. I know that children who are more familiar with rhymes tend to be better readers in the earlier grades. I believe that rhymes and songs can teach a small child a lot about language: it's melody, sounds and the form of language. There has been much publicity about the benefits of babies and children listening to classical music but good old nursery rhymes and songs are also good listening choices. But I digress from Sam . . .
He's still teething; these teeth are coming in so slowly. He won't chew on teethers anymore. Today he tried biting on my shoulder. Without thinking, I cried out in pain (he left marks!). Poor Sam was upset that I was upset and I ended up having to console him, explaining that it hurt mommy when he bit her.
The book of the week has been "Baseball Bob" by William Joyce. I've read that book over and over at Sam's insistence. He calls it "Bop" (for Bob). He also learned to say "Bzzzzz" like a bee, adding to his repertoire of animal sounds.
That's all for this week, Kimberly
