May 2, 2000
May 2, 2000For the past month or so I've been helping Sam learn to fall asleep in his crib instead of nursing. He can now, but only if I am sitting nearby. Sometimes I have to pat his back a little or sing or tell him a story as he drifts off. Some nights he falls asleep easily, practicing new words and smiling to me in the darkness. Other nights he fights sleep and stands to be picked up for another kiss. His little arms tightly embrace and he gives me a kiss or takes a mouthful of my hair. When he gets really good at falling asleep in his crib it will be time to address the night waking. Sam has never slept through the night and every night ends up in bed with Mike and me. I don't really mind that he spends part of the night with us but some of our friends and relatives don't really understand.
Sam has begun to say some multi-syllabic utterances like "daddy" (at first he'd say dee-da) and "good dog" and "puppy dog." He doesn't really babble anymore; everything he says is communicative.
Even though he has been walking for a while, Sam isn't physically very adventurous. He's not used to steps and cannot go down them without help. He's cautious and won't even attempt to go down a step; he just stands at the edge and calls for me to help him. He climbs stairs but has never attempted to climb up onto furniture.
Take care, Kimberly
