April 18, 2000
April 18, 2000When will I stop worrying about how little Sam eats? He is very particular about what he will eat, for example, he won't eat most orange food. What he will eat varies widely from day to day, week to week. One day he'll eat two bananas and then won't even take a bite from a banana for a week. He used to love yogurt and I would put fruit in it because he won't eat most fruit plain. Now he won't even take a bite of yogurt. Sometimes he gobbles down green beans and then other days he won't even touch them. He did eat some chicken this week -- a first!
The other thing that concerns me is that when Sam does eat, he eats very small portions. He might eat 1/2 of a piece of peanut butter toast or 2 ounces of yogurt. Even when I try to cut back on nursing, his appetite remains small.
I suppose I have to be patient. Sam never liked pureed food and only started to take any interest in food when I first gave him some finger food at about 8 months. He frequently had days when he refused all solid food until he was about 11 months or so. I suppose he is about 4-5 months behind his peers when it comes to eating solid food so I should be more patient with him.
I've been trying to make mealtime more fun for Sam. I offer him a
choice between sitting at his little table and sitting in his high
chair. I gave him toy dishes and clean, empty food containers to play
with. He enjoys pretending to eat or feed his teddy bear and makes
eating noises, "nyum-nyum-nyum." One day even requested to be fed by
saying "nyum-nyum." Most of the time I think he doesn't care if he
gets solid food or not, although I keep offering it. To be fair to
him, he's teething now, so I try to be understanding when he picks at
his lunch then reaches for me and says, "nurse?"
