April 11, 2000

What a week! Sam's sleep and eating habits have been erratic. He's been fluctuating from taking a good nap and sleeping well at night to only catnapping in the daytime and waking up 5 times at night. Bedtime fluctuates from 7:00 one night to 11:00 the next. He's never been this inconsistent. He had a fever (from the MMR shot???) last week as well and is still congested from his cold. Plus, he's teething! I hope once summer comes he won't get so many colds and will settle into a more normal routine.

Sam's expressive language is exploding. Every day he says a new word or two. I'm trying to write all of them down, as any good speech-language pathologist would (it's very professional -- they're listed on the back of an envelope).

Sam was formally introduced to mud this week. I took him to the playground behind the elementary school and let him walk around in the field. He came to a mud puddle and was interested in it so I showed him how to take a stick and drag it through the muddy water. He wasn't satisfied with that for long and started to splash with the stick. He then ended up standing in the mud puddle splashing and eventually sitting in it. What a mess! He was dirty and muddy through his clothes, through his diaper, down to his skin. We went home and he immediately went into the bath and his shoes and clothes went into the washer. He loves water of any kind. He splashes in the water from the faucet, reaches out to feel the water falling in the shower and adores his bath. It's hard to get him out of the bathtub. Long after the water has gotten cold, Sam is content to sit in the tub and play. His teeth (gums?) are chattering, he's shivering, and yet he wants to stay in the water.

Well, Sam's asleep now so I have a few minutes to myself!
