Well, Sam is one! I wouldn't call his birthday a great day for him, as he was tired and cranky all day. In fact, he went to bed at 5:00 p.m. He played with his cake and tasted the icing, but was overwhelmed by the gifts. We were visiting my sister-in-law's house so there were aunts and grandparents and cousins and neighbors at the party and it was a little too much for my sleepy little boy.

Sam

I really felt like celebrating his birthday. All week I've been thinking about when Sam was born, although only the good things. His birthday has been bittersweet for me. He is so fun to interact with now and his communication skills are really taking off, but sometimes I miss the little baby he was. But now he can do so many things, like walk over and give me a hug and press his lips to my face to "kiss" me. And I love it when he calls me 'Em-meh' (mommy). I am looking forward to watching him develop this year. Lately he's started some pretend play, like pretending to feed his teddy bear or to talk on a toy phone (or a block that he uses as a phone). He loves to imitate whatever I am doing and to help me do chores around the house. And he'll go into his room and play by himself and look at books by himself. Yet he is still a baby: he needs his cuddles, loves to be carried around, and is still deeply attached to nursing. I suppose this mixture of independence is what being a toddler is all about.
