The Twin Tyrants

The Twin Tyrants are a year and a half old now, and full of laughter and mischief. When I tell one of them, “It’s time to change your diap,” both of them shriek, giggle and run for cover. Yep, Jake and Tommy may once have been immobile preemie’s but now, now they run and duck and dodge with the finesse of NBA superstars. Especially when threatened with a dreaded diaper change.

Their constant chatter charms me. Tommy’s favorite words are “No-no!” He’s hopelessly bossy, but my treasured ally, keeping Jake and 4-year-old Max in line with his constant “No-no, no!” Both toddlers love trains (choo-choo!), balls (ba!) and birds (Bir! Tweet-tweet!).

Tommy has a bigger vocabulary but Jake is a climbing machine. Jake scales play towers with relish as Tommy looks up at him from the ground exclaiming his usual, “No-no!”

They still grunt (Uuhhh!) if they want something and quickly progress to their trademark banshee (Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!) if their trusty servant (me) doesn’t drop what I’m doing and immediately bow to their wishes. I’m trying to get them to say “please” when they want something but they think my efforts are funny. Besides, they’ve perfected their high-pitched shriek and know I’m at their mercy, afraid our neighbors will think ear-splitting wails of protest prove I’m hammering bamboo under their fingernails.

Usually Tommy and Jake get along well but sometimes they have epic battles, especially over their ride-on toys. We own a total of twelve (I never said the boys weren’t spoiled) ride-on toys and my boys have to have the same one or die trying to wrest it away from his brother. Other high-fight items are mommy’s lap and their sippy cups--there may be two cups but only one contains that extra drop of juice.

Good thing my little tyrants are cute. When they smile at me with their heads tilted to one side I’m a mama-melt. And I love hearing them jabber to each other when they wake up in the morning or when they’re in their cribs at night. It’s also fun to hear them make each other laugh. No, I don’t get their humor, and Max looks at them puzzled, but Jake shrieks with laughter at Tommy and Tommy giggles at Jake. Also, if I’m tickling one of them the other will laugh. I’ve never seen siblings react like this. It must be special to be a twin.
