FINALLY! SPLIT PERSONALITIES

Both of my boys have always thought they were “Jakey”. It was kind of cute at first but a little worrisome when it didn’t disappear as they got older.

Did the both boys really think they were the same person? I tried to teach them that Tommy was, well, TOMMY, but no luck. Five seconds after a toddler drill-session I’d point to Tommy and say, “Who’s that?” and they’d both yell, “Jakey!” Sigh. None of my friends with twins have experienced this particular quirk.

But…

Yesterday Tommy said, “I--Tommy!” And he was off. Now he claims everything as his own. “Tommy’s truck! No-no, Tommy’s fire-fighter shoes! Tommy’s chair!” You get the picture. He’s finally found himself, and not only that, but Jake woke up this morning (he was sleeping with Lars and I because he was having asthma problems) and asked, “Where Tommy is?’’ So enlightenment was obviously catching. ;)

Jake underwent language testing and, thank God, they think he’s at a normal development level. He has to undergo one more language evaluation, but he failed his hearing screening on one side, so it’s high-ho, high-ho back to the ENT doctor we go. That should be fun. After his hospital visit Jake only shrieks in terror at the sight of any lab coat. My response has been to avoid all medical personnel whenever possible. I’m hoping Jake’s second assessment will be normal and I can stay “thanks, but no” to another ENT visit and second set of ear tubes.

MAGICAL MOM'S GETAWAY

Two friends (Kim and Jamie) and I snuck away for a girls’ weekend in Phoenix. This came at the perfect time. My kids were attempting to “whine” me over the proverbial sanity edge, and seven inches of slushy white goop covering the ground, gray skies and plummeting temperatures weren’t improving my mood.

I craved sunshine and no tyrannical demands for “Op Art!” (Pop Tart) or my services as a referee (the twins wage epic “Mine! No, Mine!” battles). Lars took one look in my (glazed) eyes and agreed to fork out the funds for a weekend getaway, and luckily Kim and Jamie were in the same mindset. The three of us hit the internet and booked a trip away ASAP.

We arrived in Phoenix and did little besides bask in sunshine and chat until 4 a.m. Our big decision was “strawberry daiquiri or pina colada” or “should we feast on a delicious meal we don’t have to prepare right now or soak up another half hour of sun before eating?” Paradise!

I returned home completely refreshed and thrilled to hug my kids, and Lars too. After spending a weekend away on “me” I was happy to note that my idea of paradise had changed—I had rediscovered it right there at home.
