"OPERATION PLAN B"

Mabuhay. *

Whether I like it or not, the "weather to die for" for most Westerners is now hovering on 34 degrees and my body feels like a steaming cauldron all the time. Summer’s definitely in and the only saving grace is a cold shower in the middle of the day. Orion’s doing well, although he’s sweaty and sticky, not a care in the world as long as he can play. We just cool him with a wet cloth during the day and change his shirt when he’s soaked. The downside, however is that I hate to get out of the house nowadays as the heat really pierces on my head and body. That’s why we are off again to Merak for at least a week during this Lenten season to cool off.

Last Friday, we had some friends over for dinner and I started preparing for the meal early so that I will be available for Orion when Yani goes back home. Strangely enough, no matter how much lead time you have, you still have to crunch at some point. Which was what happened. Anyway, the guests arrived and the lead host was Orion. The day before, he got some "Bananas in Pyjamas" CD (and was hooked on it afterwards) and that was his "conversation piece" to our guests. He was singing, dancing, imitating and kept pulling the guests to come and see it on the computer. It was okay until he insisted and the guests were in the middle of dinner which was not cute anymore. At about 9:30 pm (his bedtime is 8:00 pm), we excused ourselves as I was getting nowhere in conversing with friends. I tried to put him to sleep but he was aware that there were still guests outside so he just played with me. Finally, I gave up and as soon as I got up, he was right next to me and stayed awake until the last guest left at 11:30 pm.

The next day we just let him sleep in and I guess the late night took its toll. Meanwhile, Aaron and I had to call a family meeting for "Operation Plan B", in the event that we have to pack our bags and head home to the Philippines. His contract will soon be finished and of course, we have to be prepared for any eventuality. Orion was content enough to play with Yani and Endang so we just let it be. We discussed our future plans and options which make us both relieved that we have a fallback position in any event. Aaron and I usually have this "family talk" as a means of keeping our communication lines tuned in together. Frankly, I believe this has helped our relationship a lot.

Now that our trip to Merak is confirmed, Aaron decided to get some gear for Orion for some father and son bonding activities. He finally got a proper bicycle seat for Orion and when they tried it out after it was installed, Orion was so content being "driven" around. We also got him a proper float vest as the beach will be too hard to resist. In the meantime, I have to pack, pack, pack….

See you next week.

From Indonesia,

Aaron, Orion & Kelly
