Kellie's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

July 30, 2003

I can’t even begin to tell you what the “B man” has been up to these days!
But I’ll try!

Brennen’s vocabulary has grown immensely these last few weeks/months he’s started to really use his words in sentences and is able to get his point across very clear. Some of his words are: Baby Duck, Door, More, poop, mine, G’s (for my sil’s), Nana, Pappa, Layla, Choo-Choo (my stepfather) Mee-Mee (McKinley) Soccer, baseball (comes out B-ball), doll, baby. 

Brennen LOVES the telephone and as soon as it rings he runs right over yelling “B”, “me” “me” “B” “talk”… the other night I phoned my mom and he drove me so crazy, climbing over me and yelling in my year that he wanted to talk. I passed the phone over to him and would you believe, clear as day he said “hi Nana”, over and over again and then related that he had “2 backpacks, 2 poops, 2 baby ducks, 2 hats” he loves the letter two and has two of everything. Brennen loves to pretend to talk on the phone too, he grabs his play phone and calls everyone I hear him say “hi G’s and then blabbering and a few 2 baby ducks inserted here and there”.

I do worry a bit that Brennen’s not on track with his vocabulary and although I’ve seen a huge improvement I might (in September) have a check up with our family doctor to assess his language skills and ensure there are no underlying issues. Everyone keeps telling me boys are usually later with their language skills and I’m not worried, but a quck review might keep some of those “mommy worry demons” away.

Brennen has been doing great during soccer he loves to run around on the field while M is playing but he’s doing better and one of my friends commented on how well he’s “calmed” down at soccer (at the beginning of the season he was CRAZY and disrupting the practice, running away from John and I and we had no opportunity to sit together and watch McKinley play, as one of us was always chasing the B.)

We’ve been so busy this summer, and its one of the reasons my updates haven’t been so timely as they should. We went camping to Sharbot Lake this year and had a blast. Brennen and McKinley love every aspect of camping, sleeping in the tent and swimming in the lake are two of their favorites. Our day during camping usually looked like this: wake-up, have breakfeast, go to the beach, back to the site for lunch, go to the beach, have a snack, go to the beach, have dinner, have one more quick dip at dusk to “clean up” (the kids were always filthy lol) and then a campfire and bed. Brennen was less interested in the fire this year, mainly because he couldn’t keep his eyes open past 8:30 or 9:00. At that time I’d lay down with him and he’d be asleep in a minute and then McKinley and daddy made a huge campfire. This worked great because he doesn’t exhibit the control needed around fire as of yet and I think him and an open roaring campfire means a real stressful evening.

Brennen loves to hang at the pool near our home (it’s a great neighbourhood pool with a wading pool and a waist deep “big girl pool” as M likes to call it. Usually, John takes the kids there 2 or 3 times during the week and I take them on the weekend. McKinley loves it and swims like a fish. Brennen seems a bit cautious (not the norm for him) but loves the lake (and shows NO caution) I think it may be the other kids and splashing that he doesn’t like. When he’s in the wading pool he lays on his stomach and “swims” along the bottom. I always say “Brennen go swim for mommy” and he does his “swim thing”.

We leave for our BIG family vacation in 9 days or so (18 days in Prince Edward Island) and I can’t say how excited we all are. My dad and his wife are coming along and I can’t wait to spend some quality time with both of them. We are staying in a small village on the ocean in a cottage in a place called Rusticoville Just yesterday I checked to see if there was a drive-in on the Island (John and I love the drive-in and mourn that there are none left in Ottawa to take the kids to) and there is one! Immediately I called home and told John and the kids that we HAD to go to the drive in while in PEI. I’m wondering how Brennen will like the ocean and if he’ll exhibit the caution he shows in the pool or be his usual wild self and rush headlong into the waves. I think a face full of salt water may cure him…but he’s surprised me in the past.

Well, that’s what we’ve been up to during a wonderful summer. We’ve also cruised through some beautiful open houses (I love to check out model homes and get decorating and renovation ideas) and Brennen loves to check out the room and usually goes into a room and says “nicccceee mamma” or “whooooooo mamma” its SO cute. We’ve gone to Silver lake for the day, gone for long evening drives with Dairy Queen to sustain us, checked out the neighbourhood parks (at least 5 of them), played in the backyard, grown a gorgeous veggie garden and have been overrun with zucchinis and tomatoes.

Reading back I guess we have been busy! Lets hope our weather in PEI stays great and we can add another great entry for our trip.!

Cheers, Kellie and Brennen
