Kellie's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

March 5, 2003

Well, yet again the Ottawa Canada weather has hit us hard after living through -40c weather and TONS of snow, we are hankering down for another snow storm calling for 25c of snow... Yikes, I think John and the kids are very very stir crazy as Brennen (otherwise known as "indoor boy" at our house) doesn't like to get cold... which means they are out of the house when it hits -7c or around there. Brennen loves to shovel our driveway with us and I usually get him to sit in our big shovel and push him and the snow around.. he loves this until its time to dump the snow...which usually means he has to get out, and then we usually get tons of screaming and tears until the shovel is emptied and off he goes again.

These last few weeks have been interesting at our house. We all had a terrible case of a virus (stomach flu etc.) we recovered and seemed to be turning the corner when I caught a cold (sore throat and stuffy nose, chest cough) McKinley threw up one night, followed by Brennen. John now has a cold in his eye and is feeling ill. My kids are normaly the healthiest crew around, McKinley has only had antibiotics once and Brennen never. Here I was thinking we'd gone through the season flu/cold free and we up and catch everything!... I'm a big believer in green leafy vegetables, protein and tons of Vitamin C for the family during these days of little sunlight and lots of virus's running around. Anyone else a bit of a fruitcake when it comes down to trying to keep their kids healthy.. I really when to town cleaning the house and using antibacterial wash on our doorknobs to ensure whatever virus had invaded our house was gone.

As a working mom its really really tough having your kids sick. Even with a SAHD to do a great job when he is sick look out.. I found it really tough working a long day, coming home, making diner, getting baths, getting snacks ready for the next day, laying out clothes for school, spending time with the kids and then getting everyone ready for bed (even John) I don't know how single parents do it, my hats off to you as I was really really tired this morning! I said a little prayer that John would be back to his healthy self again really soon.

I must this isn't the most "positive" entry ever due to my exhaustion and just plain lack of enthusiasm with anything these days, as I said the long wintery days are getting to me. I need to hear the birds, walk or heck see some grass or cement (our snow banks are getting so I can't see out our front window) I can't wait to garden and plan for re-opening our sunroom (3 season) to let the breeze through the house and just get rid of the stale winter air.

My goodness I sound grouchy..sigh .. usually I get his with this feeling every March and you should see me when we have snow at EASTER...I'm almost impossible to live with lol.

I was wondering if anyone else has some tricks they use to keep their families healthy during these long days? do you rely on Vitamins, healthy eating, flu shots, (free here in Ontario for everybody)excercise?

I was also wondering how you partner with your "partner" when the kids are ill? I find I like that darn night shift where sleep is elusive, the kids (sometimes one, sometimes both) need me to hold them and snuggle and whisper calming words, or change their PJ's due to all sorts of accidents. I find I feel empowered that they need mommy and only I will do. Which is great if its a virus that lasts 24hours lately it seems I have been mommy to all for weeks now.

Well, hopefully my next entry will be happier and healthier..

Cheers,
