Kathy's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 9, 2001

Ballet class was postponed last week because the teacher wasn't sure she'd have enough students to have a class. She already has one class during the day time for 2 year olds ("Mommy and Me"), but she was thinking about adding another class in the evening for those of us who have to work! I don't know how I feel about getting Clara into ballet... I think I'm just happy to have some stuff that she can participate in at her age! I took dance when I was a child and although I was never very good, it was fun. I'd like to expose Clara to some things like that so she can choose what she wants to do when she gets older. Anyway... I got a message on my answering machine last night from the ballet teacher and it looks like we will have class starting this Wednesday night from 5:45pm - 6:30pm. I hope it won't be too much for me to take her. I do need to get to bed early because I get up at 1:30am to go to work and I do need my sleep! :) If I can't handle it, James said he would take her. (Now how many dads do you know that would not only take their daughters to ballet class, but also participate with them?????) I, myself, am not much of a dancer, but I think it will be fun. :)

Last Friday was the first Kindermusik class for the semester. It was big, 10 kids, but the teacher is splitting it into 2 classes. Clara, as always, had a blast! The class is called "Our Time" and is for kids from 1 1/2 - 3 years old. Clara stayed near me a little more than usual, or she "hogged" the teacher's attention. The theme for this semester is water, but we sang some of the more traditional songs as well... "Ring around the Rosie" and "If Your Happy and You Know It." The kids got to play with scarves, balls, little percussion instruments, and sat on a blanket for story time. We will stay in the class at 11am which is fine with me, but it does push on Clara's nap time a little bit. I think she'll be ok for class, but she gets cranky on the way home.

Yesterday when I was out shopping, I got Clara a Fisher Price Tricycle. James' boss had given Clara a bike that his daughter out grew, but it was still quite big for Clara. She goes nuts whenever she sees it in the garage, so I thought it might be time for a tricycle. Unfortunately, Clara was very exited about it, but at the same time, very tired. James put it together for her and she wanted to help. Luckily the first ride was inside on the carpet because it wasn't long until the first crash! James said she did figure out how to pedal it, but I didn't see her. I think it is still a little too big.

That is one thing about her going to the babysitter... She wants to be like the big kids so much! I guess that's ok though. (I don't want my baby to grow up!!!) Over the summer the kids all had water bottles so she had to have one too. At home we gave her one with a squirt top, but at the babysitter's she wanted a screw on cap just like the big kids!

Also out shopping yesterday, I got Clara some more Baby Einstein Flash Cards... this pack has animals on it. She already knows about half of them (20 or so). She has 7 or 8 videos, several Baby Einstein books, and now two sets of Flash Cards. I keep the cards up on her shelf so they don't end up all over the house, but she knows they are there. She'll go over to the shelf, point at them, and say "cards!cards!" I love the whole Baby Einstein series and I do think it has helped her speech and vocabulary. She knows a lot of words. I've never tried to count. Some of them you can only understand when you know what she is trying to say, but James commented to me last week that he felt like he was actually able to carry on a conversation with her somewhat! Of course, it's always the same... "What's your name?" "Clara" (sometimes she tries to get the "Colburn" too!) "How old are you?" "TWO!" (even though she isn't two yet, that's what she learned!) and "How are you?" "good"

I got her the new Baby Galileo video in the Baby Einstein series. It's all about the sky, planets, galaxies, etc. The only problem with that one is when they play "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"... You see, we always play sleepytime music when it's time for Clara to go to sleep. Even now, she still screams for awhile when we first put her down. "Twinkle, Twinkle" is one of the songs on her tapes. When she hears it on the Baby Galileo video, she thinks we are trying to make her go to sleep and starts screaming! As soon as that song is over, she stops crying!

Other than Ballet Class on Wednesday, I'm not expecting too much new this week... but who knows??? With a toddler in the house, it seems there is always something new!
