Kathy's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

October 3, 2002

Wow! I can't believe it's been almost three weeks since I have wrote! It seems like it was just yesterday but, yet a long time ago as well. Sorry for being MIA - I have spending all my extra time with Seth these days.

*AL's memorial walk/run for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin*

On Saturday, September 21st, Steve, Seth and I did the five mile walk. We did it last year as well. All of our friends and family were so very generous in their pledges we ended up raising over two hundred dollars for the cause! It means a great deal to us since Seth was in this hospital for his first five weeks of his life. Going back to the walk - The weather couldn't have been any better that day. It was sunny with a high around 75 degrees. Seth seemed a little out of sorts seeing all the people around us. He wasn't too fond of his stroller either. Steve carried him quite a bit and I did once in awhile. Torwards the end neither of us could carry him anymore so he just had to sit in his stroller. He ended up falling alseep and missing out on all the fun parts afterward. :o( After the finish line is the Summerfest grounds that are opened for the walkers/runners to enjoy food, some entertainment, a heatlh tent and some children's activities. The lucky thing was that later that day we went to an awsome park that was built not too long ago so Seth got to have fun there! This park is called Kids Connection. It is a huge play area built with all wood except the slides and swings of course. If I was a little kid again I would be in kids paradise! Of cource I had forgot my camera so I have no picture's of this wonderful day. :o( It seems as if I have been slacking in my picture taking as well. Seth is getting harder to take pictures of. He is a busy body moving target!!!

*Sleeping at the wheel or should I say wheels?*

Last week I took Seth out shopping with me. First we went to Kohl's department store for a birthday gift for my friend and afterwards I needed to get a few groceries. At the grocery store they have these car carts I had mentioned them in one of my BT diary entries when they first came out. For someone who hasn't seen one or is wondering what they look like I'll try and explain a little - It's a regular shopping cart that looks like a childs play car with two seats, seatbelts and two steering wheels in the front for children. (I actually took some pictures of it -when I get them developed I'll try my best to get it sent here. I still have a few pictures on the roll so it might take a little while). Seth absoulutly loves riding in them. Seth was riding in the front of one this day and he must have been exhausted because he leaned his cheeck between the two steering wheels and fell asleep! Everyone that saw it cracked up and said how cute he was. One lady said "sleeping at the wheel already" Another said to me "Do you know your conducter is sleeping". Again I didn't have my camerea with me but, thanks to disposable camereas that were at the check out lane I was able to capture this cute moment on film even though it cost me an arm and a leg for it!!! (The commercial for the credit card that always says how much things are but, in the end it's priceless. Well that's how I felt about buying the camera). I probably looked like such a fool I think I took six pictures from all different angles of Seth sleeping in the car cart. Hey what can I say I saw a scrapbook moment and took it! I didn't care how foolish I looked!

*Road trip*

This past weekend Seth and I took a road trip up north to Waupaca WI. to witness a very close friend of mine get baptized. (It was an adult baptism). We left Saturday and arrived there around 5:30P.M. My friend Seth and I were invited to one of the Church members home for a wonderful meal this night. They made Turkey on the grill and had all sorts of side dishes to go along with it. The meal was wonderful! Seth did pretty well being in a strange place and all. I think it helped that they had 3 kids ages 3, 5, & 9. Seth had a blast playing with them. He did very well sleeping in the Hotel both nights and he only asked for Daddy a few times. On Sunday, Seth went in the Churches nursery with no problems at all and did great the whole time he was there! He was happy to see me when I came back to get him though. Seth and I were able to go swimming this night as well. At first, Seth didn't want to get in the water but, after he was in he loved it. The next day we left for home and Seth was wonderful in the car. He ended up falling alseep for the majority of the way home and he didn't fuss once the whole way there or back. It was a nice mini-trip but, were both happy to be home. :o)

*Seth's neonatal follow up appointment*

Seth's appointment went pretty much the same as last time. They ask me lots of questions about what Seth is doing. They check his growth from the last visit. He weighs 23lbs. and is 34" now. Then the therapists come and do their evaluation on him. They use a test called Bailly.(SP?) They bring in this big suitcase full of stuff to test Seth on. According to the test Seth is at a 27 month level for his motor skills for his mental skills he tested at a 23 month olds level. His age from his birth date is 26 months and his age from his due date comes out to be 24 months. Seth could do most of the stuff they showed him. He at least tried each thing. One thing they had him do was match some cicles that were different colors like black, green, blue, yellow and red with the ones in this book that was kida like a puzzle. I was suprised that Seth knew which color went where he did excellent with that one. The thing he was the least interested in was pointing out pictures in a book he just didn't even want to try. He keept looking for the other stuff. I did ask about his speech/language skills and they asked me if I'd like a Speech Therapist come and do a prelimanary test on him. I kept asking them what they thought and they just said it was borderline (I am not sure if they could tell me much as they were not Speech Therapists themselves). I did decide that I would like a ST - (Speech Therapist) to come and take a look for me. So after 15 minutes one came up and spent some time with us and listened to my concerns and saw and played with Seth. She said she would like Seth to have a evaluation because it's seems like Seth may have what is called Apraxia of Speech. She explained it to me a little and warned me not to beleve everything that was on the internet about it if I looked it up. I have come to the understanding that it's where Seth understands a lot more then he can communicate. It has to do something with articulating words and getting them out from your mouth. I looked up one site that I think is credible and I looked at a few others and they all seemed to say the same thing about it. Here is a link to the site I have been reading if your curious about it as I am having a hard time explaining it myself.

Here it is:

http://www.apraxia-kids.org/

As any parent would feel, I have to admit, I am a bit overwhelmed with all of this. I myself have a learning disabity and I can remember all the hard time I had with homework and school. Even with my grammer still! I remember it seemed so hard for me but, so easy for the other kids in my class. They ST hasn't ruled that Seth has this yet but, a lot of it makes sense to me if you can understand that. I am glad we are finding this out now so we can help Seth and give him the proper ways of learning how to communicate with us. I will keep you posted on whats going on with this. So far the ST called me today to tell me the first time they could get us in for an evaluation would be a month from now. She did say we could start the actual therapy first and slowly do the evaluation over the time they are working with him. I just had to check with our insurance company a few things and get back with her whitch I did but, I got her voice mail and she didn't return my call yet.

Before I end this entry, I just wanted to send my thoughts and prayers out to Jenny, Brent, Reilly and Paige. I am so happy you are all doing well and Reilly is recovering from her sad & scary ordeal. Seth and I hope you had the greatest 1st birthday ever!!! You are a very special little girl! :o)

Love,

~Kathy & Seth :o)
