February 6, 2003
Time for an update on my big guy!!! Yesterday, Feb. 5th was his half birthday. So now he’s my big two and a half year old Sethman!!!
*The sickies*
Okay what’s going on!?! All the kids I watch were or are sick and it hit Seth too! Last week Wednesday Seth spiked a 102.8 fever. :o( He would play for a little while and then he would come and cuddle up with me. He also developed a runny nose and cough. Ally one of the kids I watch had come down with croup on Monday night. Her Mom called me to let me know because she was at our home that Monday. Then the other little boy I watch came down with high fevers like 104.8! His Mom took him to the emergency room but, they said it was just a type of flu and had to take its course this was last Friday. (Same day I took Seth in). She did take him to his regular Dr. on Monday because he was still running a fever and he told her the same thing. I heard from her today and his fever came down some but, it was still there. Her Mom was watching him for her and when she got home from work he had a very red eye so she ended up taking him in to the Dr’s once again. This time they finally diagnosed him with a sinus infection and a very red ear!!! The poor little guy who’s 4 ½ has been battling this thing for almost a week now!!! I am so glad he’ll, be getting better he has had to be just miserable this past week. His Mom was so glad to finally get him on the road to recovery too. I hope her family stays well from now on too. Back to Seth, I just thought he had come down with a little cold so; I gave him some Tylenol and snuggled him up. Little did I know his fever would stay around for the next couple of days. I called the nurse to see if what I could do for him and when and if I should maybe bring him in. They left it up to me if I thought he should be seen or not. They did ask me if he was pulling on his ear and I said no because he wasn’t. Well, on the third day after much debate I finally decided it was time for him to see the Dr. I thought to myself if he has anything then at least we can get some meds to make him feel better. If he doesn’t then at least I know he’s not suffering when I could have prevented it. I just hate it when he’s sick I feel so bad for him. I also dread the debate in my head should I take him to the Dr. or shouldn’t I. On my way to my ob appointment I decided I was taking him in so we ended up going to after hour clinic because when I called the RN that morning she told me to bring him to after hours clinic if I wanted as they had no open appointments for that day. Seth fell asleep during the long ride to the office and woke up when we got there. He wasn’t in the best moods and had developed some kind of fear of going to the Dr’s lately. So he woke up and cried “NOOOO I want to gooo hooommmme Mommy” we had to wait about 15 minutes in the waiting room all the while Seth was whining. When Seth was called he pitched a little fit and began crying even harder. We tried to get his current weight but, he was too upset. The RN looked at his chart and realized we had been there in December and said that his weight from then would be okay. We got into the exam room and I finally got Seth settled down after the nurse took his temp and listened to his chest with her stethoscope. Then the Dr. came in and washed his hands and then asked what was going on with Seth. I told him what had been going on the past few days then after that he did the exam. Looking into his eyes nose and ears with his little tool first he looked in Seth’s left ear and said that looked clear and then onto the right and said “yep that one’s a bit pink looks like we have an ear infection here”. Then he listened to Seth chest and said that sounded good. He did say he had some congestion in the back of his neck though. Seth then asked him for a sucker and stickers. The Dr. asked me if he could have a sucker and of course I let him have one because he was so good for the Dr. and stopped his whining and let the Dr. examine him. I wanted him to remember a positive experience in hopes the next time we go he won’t get so fearful of being there. The Dr. also gave me enough samples of antibiotic for the next seven days. Tomorrow he will have his last dose. I had to mix each one with water because it was in powder form. So, I felt quite like the chemist mixing it with the right amount this past week. He also gave us some samples of Dimetapp for Seth’s cough. Seth is finally feeling better and I am so glad I did end up taking him in. The poor guy was probably in pain. For some reason my the Dr.’s don’t do ear rechecks but, luckily Seth has his well check up next Tuesday so we’ll know if his ear cleared up for sure ort not. I am hoping he will not be so scared this next week as well. I would really like to see how much he weighs.
*Seth can count to ten!*
Seth’s vocabulary continues to grow and grow. He has full sentences and uses all the words in the correct way. I am not much of a swearer but, last week I slipped and Seth repeated me!!! It was only D@#$ luckily he hasn’t repeated it again. I am sure he’ll pick up on all the swear words eventually but, I hope to keep them away as long as possible.
I have been reading Seth the book Five Little monkeys lately. Which he just loves he actually helps me read it shaking his little finger during the part of Mama calling the Doctor. :o) Well one time after we were done reading the book without any help from Steve or me he started to count. He started at one and ended at ten saying all the right numbers in between!!! I was floored we haven’t been working on counting lately. I have actually been trying to teach him his ABC’s. He can say abc and qrst but, then he needs my help for the rest except at the end he say wxyz. He hasn’t perfected all of the letters so some sound strange but, he does quite well. Today after watching Barney he started counting but, started at 5 not one. We are continuing to work with him on both of these skills and I am just amazed by his determination to learn. Just a few months ago I was very worried that he was going to have major problems in this particular area. Boy, was I wrong and I am glad I was.
It’s getting late here and my brain has decided to stop working as I just can’t think of anything more to write even though I am sure there’s more. So, I’m going to end it here for this week.
BIG (((HUGS))) to everyone!!!
Love,
Kathy, Seth & LSP :o)
