September 1st, 2002
Collin is 14 months old.
**Goodbye August, Hello September!**
I’m so glad that August is over because it’s such a hard month for me. August 31st, marked 4 years since my father passed away. Along with that, there was the anniversary of my mother’s passing, the anniversary of my grandfather’s passing, the anniversary of Mark’s father’s passing, the breaking of my toe and my 30th birthday – all in the SAME month! Whew! Once again, hello September, I’m so happy to see you!
**Waiting For Fall**
Anyone else out there glad that autumn is just around the corner? Autumn is my favorite time of year so I’m very much looking forward to it. I love the rich golden and crimson colors of the trees, the warm smell of burning firewood, the sound of crisp leaves beneath my feet, the feel of a soft sweatshirt, and the taste of sweet warm homemade baked goods. I love decorating for autumn, Halloween and Thanksgiving and I like baking. I especially like making things such as homemade bread, banana and zucchini breads, homemade cinnamon rolls, muffins, and apple, peach, and cherry cobblers and crisps. I’m also a big crock-pot fan and enjoy making things like potato and corn chowder, vegetable soup or my “famous” chili on those crisp cool afternoons! You know, all those warm yummy (and fattening!) comfort foods - Just like mom used to make!!! I also love making special treats for everyone for Halloween like caramel apples, popcorn balls and cupcakes. Hey, I’m getting hungry now!
**The Bottle Blues**
Collin turned 14 months on August 29th and I have a dilemma. Well, I don’t even know if I’d call it a dilemma but anyway. We introduced a sippy cup to Collin I think when he was about 6 or so months old. He caught on quickly and has always liked drinking from his sippy. We originally had planned on weaning from the bottle at 1 year (our pediatrician is big on weaning at 1 year) but the days slipped by us and here we are still on the bottle – well, sort of. I think that if I would have taken the bottle away before Collin seemed to become emotionally “attached” to it, we would have been fine – But we didn’t and now I’m not sure how to go about getting him off it completely. We give Collin most of his milk via sippy cup but when he’s whiney or over tired he give us the sign for bottle (we didn’t teach him the sign because I didn’t want him asking for it so he’s made up his own! Little smarty-pants!) and will say, “ottle, ottle” (bottle) over and over and over again until we cave in. I know, we are suckers for our son! I’d say he only gets about 2, rarely 3, bottles a day, but I feel so guilty since our pediatrician says it’s not good for children to have a bottle past the age of 1. There have been plenty of days that Collin has only had 1 bottle (before bed on the days where we are out and about during the day) but on days where we're home all day and he cries for one, we usually will give in because we hate to see him cry. He only gets a bottle at home, never when we’re out and he doesn’t seem to mind that. It’s not that he doesn’t like his sippy, he does, but he just loves his bottle too! I’ve gone so far as to let him cry it out, but this kid will cry and cry and cry until he gets the bottle. I have to admit there have been times I’ve let him have a bottle just so he’ll take his nap because when he doesn’t get his nap he’s EXTRA cranky!!! Okay, here is my question: how have you moms out there weaned your children off the bottle? Have you made them go cold turkey and just taken it away or have you enforced a “plan” of gently taking more bottles away each day/week? Do you think 14 months is too old for a bottle? I’m sure that if we could just get through the first few days without a bottle, it would be fine, but the look of want in my child’s big brown eyes gets me every time! I’m open to suggestions and ideas of any kind if anyone out there can help me!!!
**There's Something In The Water**
I found out that another one of my girlfriends is pregnant! That makes three of my friends who are now expecting. One is due in February, one due in April and one due in May. Doesn’t it seem like pregnancies come in groups? When I was pregnant with Collin, I knew four other women who were pregnant along with me. I think it’s the water around here – anyone want me to send them some?!
Okay, enough for now, I’m off to listen to the rest of the Nebraska game! :)
Until next time-
Hugs, Jennifer & Collin
