Jenni's Diary Entries

September 11, 2004

On September 11, 2001 I was woken up by the sound of the phone ringing. It was Tom who told me to turn on the TV because a plane had just crashed into one of the World Trade center Towers. I was still mostly asleep so I really wasn't comprehending what he was saying. I got off the phone with him just in time to see the second plane hit. I was absolutley stunned! Still not comprehending what was really happening I went to get Kevin from his bed (he was almost 3). I got him up and realised that his diaper was dry and asked him if he'd like to try going on the potty and he said yes so I let him down and by the time I reached the bathroom he had gone all by himself. Big deal you say, well up until this point I had no luck at all with potty training him, but from that day on he decided he was potty trained! To this day when I think of 9/11 I think of not only all those who died but of Kevin becoming potty trained. Well back to the Twin Towers. We tried to go about our day as normally as possible but I couldn't make it more than a half hour without crying and Kevin kept asking me what was wrong. I can remember thinking that watching all that unfold was like watching that one Die Hard movie where the terroists are sending them on a wild goose chase while they were actually trying to rob the Treasury. I also remember thinking (em)how in the world are those things still standing (/em)and then watching them collapse right before my eyes.

The next few days seemed to drag on in errie silence, everyone was in shock and it seemed like everything came to a standstill; all planes were grounded and all regular tv broadcasting was halted and we had 24hr new coverage. We live not to far from O'hare airport and are constantly bombarded with plane noise but now everything was silent. When the planes did start flying again I remember being so paranoid that a plane would crash right before my eyes.

I can remember thinking we'd go in and take care of the people who we're responsible, little did I know that 3 years later we are no closer to finding them and that we'd be at war with another country.

To this day I can't listen to the song, (a There You'll Be by Faith Hill.without thinking of Todd Beamer and his family. I'm not sure why, maybe because he went to collage near us but the story of him and his family really touched me. Have you ever hear the song, Have You Forgotten by Darryl Worely? It says it all!

No I have not forgotten, it haunts me to this day.
