Jen B's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 6, 2000

I can't believe my little boy's birthday is TOMORROW. Has it really been a year? Last year, Sept. 6 was Labor Day, and I spent the evening with a friend, helping make favors for her baby shower. She was due about a month after I was, and was expecting a boy. I was too, but the ultrasound technician thought otherwise. That's another story, though.

I started feeling uneasy -- not nauseous or anything, just uncomfortable. I was very swollen with edema, which only came on the last couple weeks of pregnancy. I wasn't due until the 24th, so I decided to leave my friend's house early to get some rest. I kept debating with Chris whether I should go to work, since I still felt crummy and was unable to sleep. I woke up at 5, just before Chris's alarm went off, started to head to the bathroom, when -- sploosh -- my water broke. I woke Chris up and told him what was going on.

I took a shower while he got our things loaded in the car and took the dog to the neighbors' house. The hospital was 45 minutes away, and (of course) we got behind a few Sunday drivers. I had been trying to time my contractions (since about five minutes after my water broke), and couldn't tell where one stopped and the next one started.

We got to the hospital about 6:50, and they hooked me up to the monitors -- the nurse looked at me funny when I told her I couldn't time the contractions. When she came back to "paino-meter", as Chris called it, she nodded her head, checked how dilated I was (4cm), then asked if I wanted drugs. I said I just wanted to sleep. They gave me Stadol, which as far as I'm concerned is wonderful stuff. I could feel the contractions still, but they didn't hurt as much.

My mom stopped in to check on us, and was getting ready to leave when my doctor showed up. She decided to see what he had to say before she left (so she'd know when to come back). I was hoping he'd authorize more drugs, since original dose had worn off. He checked me, then asked the nurses where my mom went. They brought her in, and told her where to sit. She did, and then he said it was time to start pushing. DO WHAT?!?!?!? I couldn't believe it. I sort of felt like pushing, but it was only about 9:40 or so. It couldn't be time yet, but I was 10cm.

Christopher Jacob Beermann was born at 10:45 a.m. on Sept. 7, 1999. He was 6lbs, 15 oz, and 19 inches long. When the doctor said, "It's a boy, " I looked right at Chris and said "I told you so!" He happened to believe the u/s tech and told everyone we were having a girl. Since our lil' guy came out "at attention," there was no longer any doubt as to his gender!

For the next several days (OK, weeks), I would spend hours just holding him and staring at him, amazed at the thought that I could have a part in creating something so beautiful. I still stare at him sometimes, but it's a little tougher now that he's mobile. I've got to go now, and finish cleaning house for his (first) party tomorrow.
