Jen B's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

June 19, 2001

We're back from Pittsburgh, and not a moment too soon. The trip went better than I thought it would, but there were still some aggravations. We got in on Sunday, and had time to go to the zoo. BIL had managed to get us free tickets, which was nice. We figured that since Jake had just spent over five hours in his carseat, he might want to walk around a bit so we didn't bother with the stroller. He reisted holding our hands at first, but soon got the idea. He liked looking at the animals, and we had fun watching him. We'd tell him the animals' names, and ask him what that animal said (snakes go 'ssss', monkeys go 'ooh-ooh', and tigers say 'grrrr'). When he got to the rhino, he said "moo". For some reason, that cracked us up. Maybe because, for all we know, he's right.

He loved the monkeys, and even tried kissing some of them through the glass. He didn't care to see the snakes, but loved hearing his voice echo in the building. He went through stages of wanting us to carry him, which got old quickly. I thought we'd all be glad to get back to the hotel and get some sleep, but he napped on the way back and was on his second wind. Ugh.

We spent most of Monday at Kennywood, and Jake even went on a few rides. He seemed to like the ones in kiddieland, but was terrified of the carousel. He might have enjoyed the train if he hadn't been so overtired. He was so afraid of missing something, he only napped on the way to the park.

I wasn't far behind him in the fatigue department. I was a bit surprised by that, especially since I sat out almost every ride, but Chris was pretty good at keeping things at a slow pace. MIL kept pushing for BIL & him to ride as many rides as they could pack in. I guess it just didn't occour to her that when you travel with two toddlers and a pregant woman, you have to make some concessions. I did get the chance to talk with SIL though, which was nice. We mostly only talk through emails. I just haven't managed to get up to visit her (she's only an hour away), and until I can get my car registered in PA, I won't be able to. But that's another story.

Anyway, we got home in decent time, despite having had to stop when Jake threw up. Again, he hadn't had anything unusual to eat and there was no fever. It was no picnic getting him and the carseat cleaned up on the side of the highway, either. Thankfully, he seemed okay once we got back on the road.

Chris is all too glad that he'll have a short work week, as am I. I think we'll need the weekend to recuperate.

Counting down until the weekend . . .
