May 29, 2001
The holiday weekend was pretty much a wash for us. It rained almost the entire time. I had so hoped to start my garden, but it just wasn't meant to be. Maybe this weekend . . .
The weekend was also dampened by an argument Chris and I had. Back in January, we had taken a trip to Pittsburgh with BIL, SIL, and MIL. It was NOT a positive experience in my mind, but Chris thought it would be nice if we could all go back for his birth day and go to Kennywood. Once we found the house, and I got pregnant, I let him know I didn't think the trip would be such a good idea. The money could definitely be better spent, and since I can't ride rides, I'd have to spend the day pushing Jake around in the stroller. He'd likely be bored too, since he doesn't like rides. He's even terrified of elevators and escalators! So I can't imagine he'd have much fun, either.
But Chris just blew me off, saying that we'd have to see if we can even afford it. Well, the day of our housewarming, MIL cornered him and asked if we were going on this trip or not. She said she had something else come up for that weekend, and if we weren't going, she needed to know. Chris told her that we really couldn't afford the trip right now, and she offered to pay for our hotel room. He accepted, without so much as glancing in my direction. I was NOT pleased. I held my tongue, though--for a whole week. He has been under a lot of pressure at work, and I didn't want to add to it. Since he had the entire holiday weekend off, I waited until then to talk to him. I reminded him of my previous concerns, and he said he had no idea I felt so strongly about the trip. Gee, I'd only been telling him for three months. The least he could have done was consult with me before accepting is mom's offer. Not that it changed a darned thing. I offered a compromise, like going to a local park (like Hershey or Dorney). That way, we could save money, both parks have things besides rides to do, and I wouldn't have to spend another weekend with the in-laws. He wouldn't even consider it!
I could see this was going to be one of those times when compromising just isn't an option, so I agreed to go--for a price. Chris told me on my birthday he owed me another gift, so I told him he was going to get me the birthstone pendant I've been wanting since Jacob was born.
I did manage to get Jacob's scrapbook caught up to date. I'm pleased with how well it's coming along, especially since I'm anxious to keep it up to date as much as possible before the baby arrives.
Now for the happy stuff. I have a bit of bragging about my boy to do. At bedtime one night, he went straight to our room, so Chris laid down on the bed. Jake went up to him and said "night-night", grabbed the baby monitor and left the room. It was so cute, and now he has to put mommy and daddy to bed each night before he goes to bed. He'll even walk out of the room and close the door!
He is also getting to where he knows he needs a diaper change. He doesn't say anything, but will go get a diaper wipe, and try to wipe himself (with his pants still on). I'll ask if he needs a new diaper, and he'll bring the wipe to me. Sometimes, he'll even lay down without being asked. Then when I get his diaper open, he'll try to grab the wipe and wipe himself! I'm so proud of him, but am leery of reading too much into this. As much as I'd like to avoid having two in diapers, I'm not going to think of training him until he's obvbiously ready. It's still encouraging, though.
We're getting ready to go meet Daddy at work so he can take Jacob for a haircut. Chris wasn't happy with his last cut (said it was too long), and wants to take him to the barber shop. That's fine by me, but I want to see how he'll manage to keep the lil' guy still long enough to get more that a few hairs snipped off. It should be very entertaining.
Jen & Jacob =)
