Jen B's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

April 4, 2001

Yesterday was our "mortgage commitment" date, which came and went without fanfare. We had already learned last week that we would be approved, but that the commitment letter would take a week to two weeks. I have to wonder why it could possibly take so darned long for them to print out a lousy letter, but at least they're going to do it.

That same day, I took Jacob to get our Mommy and Me portrait done. Now I made sure that he'd had his nap and his lunch just before we left, and we arrived a bit early for the appointment (so we'd have time to get settled). The minute we walked behind the curtain, Jake started to freak out. He settled down only slightly when I sat him on my lap for the first pose. When it came time to shoot the poses of him alone, he screamed, cried, and scrambled off the table.

It took forever for the photographer and I to calm him down, and we finally figured out that if we used backgrounds that had props he could hold/play with, he settled down and did just fine. Otherwise, he was a holy terror. We won't even talk about him trying to run off while I paid the bill.

The portraits will be ready the week before we move, so I'll send them out with the new address cards. That reminds me, I still don't have a mailing address for our new house! Since the folks we're buying from used it as a vacation home, they never put a mailbox out (all the other houses on the street have them), so we don't know if the street and mailing address are the same or not. Silly, isn't it?

We spent our weekend cleaning and packing up the basement. We still have lots to do, but we've made a pretty good dent in things. To keep Jacob occupied, we put an Elmo video on, and gave him some snacks. That worked very well--until the video was over. Then Jake started throwing toys downstairs at us (over the baby gate). When we stopped tossing it back, he got mad and started throwing dog food. We managed to put a stop to that, but when I came upstairs for the day, I found the rest of Missy's food was floating in her water dish. Ugh.

It took every ounce of restraint not to yell at Jake, but I managed to calmly clean up the mess and discuss the "no playing with dog food" rule with him. I doubt it had much impact, especially since he tends to do that stuff when he's bored and frustrated. I know I'll be in for more of that behaviour as I spend the next few weeks packing up everything we own.

Today will be our first day out of the house in almost a week (not counting church). It's pretty sad when running errands starts to look appealing. Ah, the life of an at-home parent . . .

Jen & Jacob =)
