Jen B's Diary EntriesDiary Navigation: |
January 24, 2002
Okay, I admit it. I've been pretty slack about posting entries here. Chalk it up to having a newborn in the house--not to say that Jake doesn't keep me just as busy.
I swear, that kid is a sponge when it comes to learning new things, particularly things I'd rather he didn't. On the positive side, he's learning gobs of new words each day, including a few in Spanish. Gracias to Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer. He loves to sing, though he does so very loud and off key (just like his father). He's also into imaginitive play, which is oh-so-fun to watch.
He will stand right in front of the tv wearing his contructon hat, yelling "Can we fiss it?" To this, any adult present is expected to yell, "Yes we can!" Heaven help the poor soul unfamiliar with Bob the Builder or the fool who dares ignore him. In true toddler fashion, he stomps his feet and yells even louder. Gotta' love the kid.
He's also comandeered a cardboard box for his boat. In an attempt to encourage his imagination, I dragged out the crayons and suggested we color it. He enjoyed this for all of five minutes, then decided my walls needed coloring, too. The crayons were quickly returned to their "home" on top of the mantle. Once my son seemed to lose interest in his boat, I decided to retire it to the basement so that I might have one less thing to trip over. This is apparently a mutinous act--I'll spare you the details of his reaction. Suffice it to say the USS Toddler still has a port in our dining room.
We've also entered the limited palate phase. My son, who once ate almost anything you gave him, will now only eat the following seven items: bananas, yogurt mini-pancakes, chicken nuggets, fries, pizza, and PB&J sandwiches. He will (of course) eat plenty of junk food, but I will only count semi-nutritional items that constitute part of a meal. It doesn't help that Daddy is a meat-and-potatoes man, and rarely eats veggies or cheese. I'll be a very happy mommy when this phase is over.
I just got over a little phase myself. I made the mistake of reading somewhere that kids his age should be speaking in short sentences by now. I began to worry that Jake had some sort of speech disorder, since he rarely uses more than two words to convey a message. I listened to his every word intently for a week, and repeated his message in the "correct" format. Then I came to my senses and realized that he's a typical male, and will speak/grunt as little as possible to get what he wants.
Oh, and we've had a bit of progress on the potty training front. He's begun to tell me when he needs a new diaper. Most of the time he tells me before it leaks, too. So I just wait for him to tell me, though I do check him and ask/remind him from time to time. Maybe by three he'll actually try the potty.
That's it for now,
Jen & Jacob =)
